Blood and Silver is the second book of the Dark Urban Fantasy series, Deacon Chalk: Occult Bounty Hunter. This is the third Deacon Chalk story I have reviewed, so I probably don’t have to remind you how much I like this series.  When we meet up with Deacon Chalk in this installment, he is taking on the Lycanthropes.  Tuck makes sure there are plenty of unique shifters for Chalk to go head-to-head with!

Just like the other books, this one is action-packed almost from the beginning. I really like the way the author builds the suspense before it all breaks loose. You feel the anticipation of what is to come in your gut.   Another thing I really liked about this particular book is in the very beginning of the story, and at times throughout the book, we catch a small glimpse of the person Deacon is when he isn’t kicking ass and taking names.

In the first review I wrote about Blood and Bullets, I mentioned that the book reminded me a little of Laurell K. Hamilton’s early Anita Blake books. This still holds true, but make no mistake: Tuck has created a series that is uniquely his own.

He hasn’t met a monster yet that could give him a scare. With ice in his veins, silver hollow-points in his chambers, and an innate ability to rise from the dead, what’s to fear? The answer may be something he doesn’t want to face. . .

Deacon Chalk normally has no trouble telling innocent victims from real monsters. So protecting an abused pregnant were-dog is a no-brainer. . .until a vicious lycanthrope leader and his brotherhood target Deacon, other shape-shifters, and any humans in their way. Suddenly, Deacon is outnumbered, outgunned, and unsure who–or what–to trust. The only edge he has left is a weapon hungry for his soul and his most savage impulses. And using it will exact a price even this hell-raising hunter fears to pay. . .

Spider’s Lullaby is a novella in the Deacon Chalk: Occult Bounty Hunter series.  The story takes place after the first novel, Blood and Bullets.

I reviewed Blood and Bullets a short while ago and I was hooked on Deacon Chalk, and after reading Spider’s Lullaby that hasn’t changed. The action starts immediately and you don’t get off of the roller coaster until the last page.

I love Deacon’s character; he is fierce and he doesn’t compromise. He takes care of what is his and makes no apologies.  Tuck has created a character whose presence cannot be ignored.

As for Tuck, I really enjoy his writing.  His ability to pen a story makes you feel like you  are in the middle of all the action. In this novella, Deacon is helping his friend, Charlotte, a were-spider, recover her stolen eggs before they hatch, because if that happens it is going to be a really bad day for everyone.  Tuck was so descriptive, he got my arachnophobia going in hyperdrive! I actually got chills reading it!

I know a lot of our readers love their romance books, but these novels are dark urban fantasy, where the monsters for the most part are really monsters, and in a book like this, you aren’t going to find a whole lot of romance.  I am not saying there isn’t any chemistry happening though!  If you are still on the fence about these books I suggest you go outside of your comfort zone and give them a try!

He lives to kill monsters. He keeps his city safe. And his silver hollow-points and back-from-the-dead abilities take out any kind of unnatural threat. But between this bad-ass bounty hunter and rescuing the most helpless of victims stands the one evil he can’t defeat…

For Deacon Chalk, loyalty is worth dying for. And now that something has taken were-spider Charlotte’s un-hatched children and one of his closest friends, he’ll tear up the human and supernatural underworlds to find them. But with his allies stripped away by an invincible Yakuza hit man and time running out, Deacon must face down the most ancient of demonic entities. And his last hope means surrendering to the inner darkness waiting hungrily to consume him …

James R. Tuck’s Blood and Bullets is the first Deacon Chalk Occult Bounty-Hunter novel. I will start by saying I am a fan of paranormal romance, but now and then I like to change it up some.  If you are looking for sparkly, lovesick vampires, walk away now.  If you are searching for something different, this may very well be your something!

The book’s main character is Deacon Chalk, and he is the quintessential bad ass, and monster hunter.  He is a bit complex; on one hand he is hard and blunt and because of this, sometimes he can come off as a bit of a jerk.  On the other hand, he is loyal and caring, especially when it comes to those in his inner circle.

I really liked the storyline and I was engrossed right away, reading the entire book in one sitting.  This book is action-packed from start to finish.  In my opinion the book is a cross between paranormal and crime novel.  In some ways, it brings to mind the early Anita Blake books, a little sexual tension and a whole lot of killing!

All of the book’s characters are well developed, and I will note that there is a lot more to it than your average vampire and slayer.  Tuck is really descriptive in his writing and you can tell a lot of thought went into this book.  I also enjoyed his writing style.  I am definitely on board for more Deacon Chalk novels!

Since hunting down the monster who took the lives of his wife and children five years ago, occult bounty-hunter Deacon Chalk has lived by only one rule.He does not work for the monsters. He kills them.So why would a vampire try to hire him as protection against another monster hunter? After enforcing his only rule Deacon goes to meet the target, a vampire slayer named Nyteblade. Professional courtesy demands he tell this Nyteblade the vampires are hiring people to kill him. Deacon finds the vampire slayer waiting in an alley. Waiting to stake him.He discovers that Nyteblade is a bumbling, fumbling, wanna-be instead of a badass vampire hunter. Someone who needs saving from monsters instead of the other way around. This is proven when a horde of vampires descend and he has to escape while trying to keep Nyteblade alive.Someone has set Deacon up. Someone wants him dead. Someone should have sent more vampires.Bound and determined, Deacon will find out who tried to kill him no matter how many bloodsuckers, were-spiders, cursed immortals, undead strippers, or insanely powerful hell-bitches he has to wade through. It’s going to be a long night.
