“I walked away from the best thing that ever happened to me, just when she needed me most.” – Rammel Hawking
Ram’s history prior to Elora’s arrival coupled with My Familiar Stranger told from Ram’s point of view and that of others close to him.
New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of eleven romances. Victoria’s Knights of Black Swan series won BEST PARANORMAL ROMANCE SERIES TWO YEARS IN A ROW. Reviewers Choice Awards, The Paranormal Romance Guild.
Her paranormal romances come with uniquely fresh perspectives on “imaginary” creatures, characters, and themes. She adds a dash of scifi, a flourish of fantasy, enough humor to make you laugh out loud, and enough steam to make you squirm in your chair. Her heroines are independent femmes with flaws and minds of their own whether they are aliens, witches, demonologists, psychics, past life therapists. Her heroes are hot and hunky, but they also have brains, character, and good manners. **Usually.
Victoria lives in The Woodlands, Texas with her husband and a very smart, mostly black German Shepherd dog. She answers her own email and is happy to hear from readers. firstname.lastname@example.org
I had finished my education and chosen to sign on with Black Swan. The ink wasn’t dry on the paper before I was out the door. First assignment was Grunewald, the unit that serviced Berlin. It was close enough by whister to patrol, but far enough away to be secluded. The building was a renovation, or adaptation really, of an eighteenth century grand house, set in the middle of a forest preserve that was off limits to anyone not Black Swan.
I had seen a lot of the world by then, but had never been to Berlin. I knew why we had a unit there. Because wherever you find prevalent nightlife, you find active nests of vampire. I didn’t have any personal experience with leeches at that time. But you don’t have to experience a thing personally to believe people when they tell you it’s nasty.
I had never heard anything about vampire until six months ago. They trained our minds and bodies to be precision instruments and occasionally said something vague about protecting the innocent. But crap on a croissant. We had no idea we were preparing to be the only barrier between humanity and monsters that turned out to be real. Our story when we met civilian juvies was that we were in military school. Hel. Close enough. Right?
Anyway, six months ago they clued me in. There are vampire out there. I had two choices when I turned eighteen. I could sign on as a vampire hunter or go home and keep my mouth shut about everything I’d learned. I was told that, if I chose the first option, I’d find that my training hadn’t even begun. I didn’t believe that. I mean how much harder could it be? Really.
They said they took the mouth shut part of option two very seriously. No threat was spelled out, but it was certainly implied. I had six months to decide. So. Sure. I thought about it. A lot.
The day before I turned eighteen I still hadn’t decided. I returned to quarters around ten o’clock, closed the door, switched on the light and nearly jumped out of my skin.
My uncle was sitting there in the dark waiting like some creeper from a film noir movie. He laughed when I jumped.
“Right. Real funny. What are you doing in this part of the world?”
His smile slowly faded away. “Sit. I want to say something.”
Uncle Al wasn’t the sort of guy you said no to. I sat in the chair closest to the sofa where he’d parked his overbearing ass. He didn’t speak at first, just stared at me, and I have to tell you it took every bit of the self-discipline I’d learned to keep from squirming under that kind of scrutiny. But I knew it was some kind of test. I was supposed to be patient and wait it out. So I did.
“You’re going to be eighteen tomorrow.”
I smirked. “So I hear.”
He nodded. “Are you decided?”
I looked away. “Honestly? No. I’ve been hoping for a sign.”
“A sign, huh?”
My uncle didn’t seem to think that was a reliable approach to decision making.
“Well, I don’t know what kind of sign you’re expecting. I thought I’d stop by. Won’t be here tomorrow. So happy birthday.”
I stood when he got up to leave. He turned toward the door, but turned back like he’d forgotten something. I could almost see him mentally patting his pockets.
“Anything you want to ask me?”
I wouldn’t have thought so, but since he put it that way. There was something.
“I guess it’s clear what choice you made. Any regrets?”
He grinned. It was a thing so rare I couldn’t think if I’d ever seen him look pleased before.
“A good question for a seventeen-year-old.”
“Indeed.” He nodded. “The answer is no. Not one. Hope that helps.”
I thought about it for a second. “Would you feel the same way if you died tomorrow?”
His grin got even bigger. “Definitely.”
With that he left without looking back and, in fact, it did help. Immensely.
Teachers are known to go on every year about how you’d better get ready because the next year is going to be so much harder. But it never is. It’s always the same thing. So when I signed on to Black Swan for life and they told me it was about to get real, I just smirked on the inside and thought, “Yeah. Yeah. I’ve heard it before.”
Looking back now I could slap my little bratty self for acting like a punk. Even if I kept it on the inside. For once the future of dread hadn’t been overstated. It had been understated.
The next four years were rigorous enough to make the first five look like a glide on a paddle board over a smooth-as-glass lake. Naturally, once we understood that we were going to be vampire hunters, and what that meant, we began to pay attention in earnest. But here’s the bare truth of that. Nothing they can do or say can truly prepare you for what it feels like the first time you are face to face with a pale-eyed leech who wants to rip you apart with virus-dripping fangs.
My internship was mostly served as backup to the Grunewald Unit knights. I went to Brazil for a few months and did an awful rotation in Central America looking for Chupacabra. Ew. Things give me willies when I think about them. Yeah. They’re even worse than vampire.
I was always sent back to Berlin though. Like it was home base. That was okay with me. There was a lot of action and the Grunewald knights were good solid teachers. They taught me about slaying vampire and they taught me about camaraderie.
Then, of course, there were German girls. I mean, you’ve gotta love girls who have beer with breakfast. Right?
It was a good place to pay my dues and hone my skills.
Three years later, I was told that I was being sent back to the States. To Jefferson Unit. Rumor had it that I was going to be a vampire slayer in New York, New York.
I wasn’t very impressed when the jeep stopped in front of J.U. It was the farthest thing from Grunewald Castle. A plain brick building with not a single window showing. Looked more like a prison than a Black Swan facility.
Don’t get me wrong. I don’t require frills to complete me. It was just an observation. I stopped at the intercom.
“Just a minute.”
I heard the buzzer and pushed on the door. My first thought was that there was an awful lot of activity for a place that looked so quiet on the outside. I hoisted my duffel up higher on my shoulder and stopped a kid going by.
“Down one level and turn right.”
I nodded my thanks and headed toward the elevators. The central area was impressive with its three-story ceiling, modern gleam and polish. The place looked like a prison from the front, but once inside it was open and light with a view to what appeared to be a park on the other side of tall windows.
When the elevator opened, I checked to make sure the down arrow was lit, stepped inside and pushed S1. A couple of girls, well, young women I guess you’d say, got in after me in workout clothes. One of them looked me over, taking in the duffel, “Transferring in?”
She smiled. “I’m Ellsbeth. I work in medical.” The elevator opened. When I realized they weren’t getting off, I finally got the hint and exited. “See you around.”
The sovereign’s office wasn’t hard to find. The reception area was glass to the hallway, but I checked the plaque just to be sure. Sol Nemamiah, Sovereign.
There was a kid at the desk, young enough to be a student. He looked up when I walked in and dropped my duffel.
“Transfer from Berlin,” I said.
“Go on in.” He pointed to a closed door.
I opened the door, hoping the instruction wasn’t a new-guy-hazing prank.
The first thing I saw was a mess of blond hair. I knew he was an elf because he had some of that hair tucked behind the ears. I guess he could have been fae, but I didn’t know of any fae knights.
When he turned around, I had three thoughts. That he was just about my age. That his eyes sparkled with elf mischief. And that the only word to describe him was beautiful.
Now don’t get me wrong. I have a strong preference for the opposite sex and don’t usually think about whether other guys are attractive or not. But this elf had it going and I would have had to be blind to not notice.
I looked past him to the man behind the desk. You could tell it was the Sovereign by the way his jaw seemed permanently clenched. He pointed at the elf. “Rammel Aelshelm Hawking, meet Basil Rathbone Landsdowne.”
The elf stuck out his hand. I took it and shook. That’s when it registered. I laughed and blurted out, “You’re P.P.”
“Excuse me?” he said, with his brow knitting.
I looked at the Sovereign and thought better of saying more. “I’ll explain. Later.”
“You two are getting a try out as partners, attached to B Team, starting,” he looked at his monitor, “Thursday. Mr. Hawking, Mr. Landsdowne’s quarters are next to yours. Show him the way.”
“Aye,” said the elf as he moved toward the outer office. He held the door open to the hall and gestured toward the elevator. “Welcome to worm patrol.”
“Should I complain about the assignment?”
He laughed. “I’ve been told that’s what they call rotation in the Big Apple.”
Once inside he pushed the third floor button and leaned back against the wall facing me. “So what was the peepee thing?”
I grinned. “Not peepee! P. P. Your reputation is widely known. Stands for parties and pussy.”
He cocked his head and gave a tiny smile. “’Tis what they say about me?”
“Yeah, man. It could be worse. They could be sayin’ you’re a limp dick wanker who’s scared of girls.”
He combined a grin with a sly look that I’d come to think of as Ram’s trademark smile. “Spent a lot of time alone as a kid. I suppose there was some pent-up party in me. Maybe I’ve over-compensated. I would no’ want P.P. on my tombstone.” The elevator car stopped and the doors opened. He held his hand on the door seam while I hoisted my duffel and stepped out. I walked next to him down the wide hallway. It was carpeted with a rich red pattern, like a five-star hotel. The plus column features of J.U. were definitely all on the inside.
“So,” he continued as we walked, “your name is Basil Rathbone…”
“Landsdowne. My mother named me after some famous swordsman.” I chuckled, looking down at the carpet. “Maybe she set me up for this gig. You think?”
“Could be. I met a guy named Rathbone when I was thirteen. He recruited me. Big fella. No’ quite a giant, but really big.”
“Yeah. That was my uncle. He’s not that big. Matter of fact he’s just about the same size as you and me.”
“No shit?” he asked. I nodded. “I guess things looked bigger when I’d just turned thirteen.” He stopped in front of a door with my name on the plaque. “This is you. That’s me one door down,” he said as he pointed down the hallway.
“Okay.” I waved my new ID in front of the sensor and heard the internal click.
“Dump your stuff and I’ll show you ‘round.”
“Sure. Give me five.” The place was a lot bigger and nicer than I expected. In fact, it was a step up. I could stand being called “worm patrol” if all the perks were like that.
I followed the elf’s suggestion, dumped my duffel, looked around and walked back out. He was leaning against the wall facing my door looking at his fingernails. He seemed to read my thoughts when he said, “’Twas exactly my reaction when I was moved up here a day ago. ‘Tis the big leagues. Compensation for risk I guess. If we pass probation, we’re goin’ to be knights.”
I let that sink in. “Knights,” I repeated.
I’ve been lookin’ at that plaque on your door. “What do you go by?”
“Noooooo.” He drew the word out, shaking his head. “That will never do. Try it on for size. ‘Hold the fucker at bay, Basil.’ ‘Basil, jump back. He’s goin’ for your dick!’” I had to laugh. It looked like I’d scored a partner who was entertaining. “See? It just will no’ do.”
“So you want to rename me? What do you suggest?”
“Shorten your limey last name to Lan. I like the sound of it. Girls will, too.”
“Oh, yeah? What do you go by?”
He smiled. “Ram.”
I nodded, somehow knowing that it suited him perfectly. “No promises but I’ll try it out for a couple of days.” Walking out of the elevator into the Hub, I said, “Have you met the guys we’re paired with?”
He didn’t elaborate. So I decided to save the interrogation for later.
Ram gave me a tour of the facility. He was thorough when he was on a mission, left no corner unexplored. He introduced me to more people than I could remember then took me back to the Hub.
Opening his arms as if he was embracing the space, he said, “The perfect end to the comprehensive tour. The lounge. Off limits to students. What’ll you have?” he asked, sitting down at a table near the double-sided fireplace and gesturing at the bar attendant at the same time.
“What do you suggest?”
Ram grinned. “Keep it simple. Irish whiskey.”
“Oh, no,” I said, shaking my head. “I haven’t eaten in a day. No alcohol on my empty stomach.”
“Great Paddy, man! What kind of a shit host am I?!?”
“Let’s get you some food. What do you…? Hold on. Let me guess.” He tapped his fingers and jiggled his right knee, his brows knitted like he was trying to divine my food preferences. “I’m guessin’ you’re a French dip man.”
It wasn’t something I would have thought of, but once he said it out loud, I couldn’t imagine wanting anything else.
“Yeah.” I grinned. “That actually sounds great.”
“With tomato soup.”
The bar attendant arrived. “I’ll have my usual. My friend, Lan here, will have a cup of tomato soup, Caesar salad, and a French dip. Do no’ dawdle and do no’ be stingy with the beef. The lad is hungry and very likely still growin’.”
I had my doubts that I was still growing, but I had no doubt that I’d been partnered with a force of nature. But that was okay because he gave every indication of being a force of good nature. It was too soon to judge, but I was already feeling like, when it came to partners, I could have done a lot worse. Only time would tell, but I might have won the lottery. And I might just survive Black Swan, with a guy like him at my side.
“So take your mind off your empty belly by tellin’ me about yourself. For starters you sound American. You from here?”
“Born in Santa Clara. You know where that is?”
“Everybody in Black Swan knows where that is. Crawlin’ with vampire. Where did you do secondary school?”
“San Francisco. You?”
“I did my internship there! Must have just missed each other. Es ist eine seltsame Welt.”
“Aye. ‘Tis a strange world.”
“How do you like it here so far?”
“Think we might have landed on our feet.”
“Yeah. Seems alright. So far.” The attendant set a whiskey down in front of Ram and put a water down for me. “So. About the other two assigned to B Team?”
Ram shook his head. “Met ‘em briefly. My first impression is that they come with sticks up their asses. Sittin’ up just a little too straight if you ask me. One of them is a berserker.”
“No way! I thought they were all gone. Stuff of legends and all that.”
Ram was shaking his head. “He’s real and big as life. And I mean big! I guess you’ll meet them soon enough if they’re sendin’ us out startin’ day after tomorrow.”
“Kinda hard to believe. Goin’ out unsupervised, I mean.”
“I hear you. But we have a day to fatten you up for the leeches and maybe get laid a few times.”
I spluttered into my water. “A few times?”
At that point, I thought he was mostly bluff and bluster, but it turned out that he could have had a new sexual experience every hour if he’d wanted. Girls did things trying to get his attention that made me feel embarrassed for them. The notice he got for being beautiful made it hard to be inconspicuous, which is what works best for vampire hunters. He took to wearing a black knit hat that covered the ears and most of that blondeness. Seemed like those two things combined were like catnip to women. But you know what? After a couple of days I couldn’t even imagine another partner. When Black Swan put us together, they must have used some kind of magic. They knew what they were doing. We complemented each other’s strengths and weaknesses. And it’s no small thing that he made things that should have been drudgery or tedium seem like fun.
We needed that counterbalance because there was plenty about our lives that was not fun.
It turned out that Ram was kind of right about the other partnership that made up B Team. Storm and Kay were straight arrow types, but I didn’t object to that. Straight arrows are predictable. Well, I mean, so long as they don’t let their berserker out.
Certainly everybody can’t be Mr. Party like Ram. Sometimes a situation calls for a serious attitude. Vampire hunting is one of those situations. The most serious one of us, Storm, was the one we started listening to, like our lives depended on it. And I guess they did.
Ram was technically the most senior member of B Team because he’d arrived a couple of hours ahead of them, but it wasn’t a distinction he cared about. He seemed more interested in getting the job done and staying alive than being in charge. So I had no problem with his priorities.
Kay got stuck with the nickname Ram gave him, just like I did. Not that I’m complaining. I wore the name “Lan” like I’d never been called anything else and the fucker might have even been right about guessing that girls would like it better than Basil.
Yeah. Storm and Kay were good guys that I learned to love and they did their share of snatching my hiney from the jaws of death.
Until they didn’t.

Her Sinful Angel – Excerpt
“Do you know of any reason why someone might want to harm you?” The man took a step towards her and fear clashed with panic again, welling up to stir the sickness in her belly and bring bile up her throat.
She backed off a few steps, shaking her head in denial even though her heart and head screamed that there might be. It was entirely possible that someone was out to hurt her, and that meant that everything the man said had happened, had happened.
Someone had grabbed her, drugged her, and this man or someone from this house had saved her.
Nina’s back hit a wall and she gasped. The man’s eyes narrowed on her and she looked away, afraid he would see the truth in her eyes. She didn’t want him to get into trouble because of her, at least not any more than he already had.
Had he been the one to save her?
Her throat closed again as she thought about that, sure he must have fought the man off in order to help her. She squeezed her eyes shut and pressed her palms against the wall behind her, her fingertips clawing at the smooth surface as she tried to anchor herself in the swirling storm of her emotions.
“I want to leave.” She managed to get the words out but they were quiet, lacking the force and conviction she had wanted to convey in them.
Because part of her didn’t want to leave. Part of her feared what was waiting for her out there. If he had sent someone to take her once, he could send someone again. She had known him too long to believe he would just let her go. She should have been on her guard after rejecting him. She should have expected him to pursue her with the same aggressive intent as he had the time she had fallen in love with him.
Before he had crushed her.
The man’s gaze bore into her, commanding her to open her eyes and look at him, to find the strength to say those words with more conviction so he would let her leave.
She had to protect him.
He didn’t know what he had become involved in by helping her and she didn’t want him to pay for his kindness.
Not as she had paid for hers so many times and in so many ways.
“I want to leave,” Nina bit out the words, putting force into them this time.
It had zero effect on the man.
“I am not sure whether the one who brought you here is gone and it is dangerous for you to be out there right now. Once we are certain that it is safe for you, you will be returned to London.” He sighed, the soft sound conveying a wealth of irritation. “It might help if you would tell me why someone wished to kidnap you.”
Nina froze. Would. Not could. He was on to her. Somehow, he was aware that she knew why the man had grabbed her and what he had intended to do with her. The little voice said to tell him, but she bit down on her tongue to stop the words from leaving her lips. The less he knew, the better. She was keeping him safe by keeping things secret from him.
“I don’t know why someone would want to do such a thing to me. I’m just an office clerk. I’m not important in any way and I don’t have any enemies.” Nina tipped her chin up and looked across the room at him.
His expression darkened, his irises turning a full shade richer, more amber than gold, as his lips flattened and his features hardened. He didn’t believe her. Her heart beat a little quicker as she held his gaze, her hands shaking where they gripped the wall beside her hips.
“What happened?” she whispered, a trickle of fear running through her veins as he stared at her, suddenly looking like the sort of man that it wasn’t wise to lie to or cross in any fashion.
Gone was the handsome and charming man who could win any woman with nothing more than a brief smile. In his place was one who looked more demon than angel. A devil made flesh and blood. A man who spoke to her on a visceral level, calling to her primal instincts.
A warrior who was the embodiment of masculinity.
One who answered her question with nothing more than a narrowing of his striking eyes.
“You made the man leave… you didn’t just find me,” she whispered breathlessly, suddenly aware that she was alone with him. The gap between them seemed to shrink and the air in the room felt too thin. Her head turned, her heart labouring as she fought the onslaught of sensation and emotion. “You drove him away so you could bring me to safety.”
He dipped his head, a slow and steady movement that didn’t seem adequate to acknowledge the magnitude of what he had done. Most of the men she knew would have beaten their chests while grinning at her, their male pride on show for all to see.
He would have acted in such a way.
But not this man.
This man was different.
He barely acknowledged what he had done, even though it was worthy of praise and gratitude.
“Thank you,” she said and he turned away from her, fixing his gaze on a door far to the left of the room.
“I will find you something to wear and will see to it that you are given some water and something to eat. Perhaps it will make you feel better.” He strode across the room and was gone before she could respond.
Air rushed back into her lungs and into the room.
It seemed larger without him in it and she couldn’t stop herself from wandering around the luxurious yet gothic and grim room as her panic and fear began to subside. Her fingers danced over polished black wooden side tables, the soft velvet of the chaise longue and the couch that stood facing it across an ebony coffee table. She caressed the cool marble of the black fireplace, lingering a moment to press her hot cheeks to it and savouring the cold before the stone warmed.
Her eyes drifted back to the black door the man had exited through. He hadn’t been the one she recalled, that one had long hair, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t involved. She had to keep her distance from him, no matter how fiercely she felt drawn to him.
She jumped as the door opened again and the man entered, carrying a silver tray on one upturned palm. The ease he did it with stirred her suspicion that he was a butler, a servant in this house, together with his practiced smile and the way he spoke to her.
“Did you ask someone to take me home?” Nina eyed him as he set the tray down on the coffee table and poured her a tall glass of icy water from a pitcher. “Can you get me out of here and take me home?”
He paused and looked up at her through long black lashes. “I cannot do that. I cannot leave this place.”
A brief flicker of something suspiciously like sorrow crossed his handsome face before he forced a smile, set the glass jug down and straightened. He smoothed his jacket down over his trousers in a manner that only strengthened her belief that he was a servant. It had to be the reason he couldn’t help her leave, and couldn’t leave himself.
“How long have you been here?” Nina eyed the water, her parched throat and aching head screaming at her to gulp it down. It might be poisoned. Laced with a drug that would knock her out again.
The man sighed, poured a second glass of water, and lifted it to his lips. He took a mouthful from it and nodded towards the other glass, a clear gesture for her to do the same now that he had shown her that it wasn’t poisoned. Nina shook her head.
The water might not contain the drug. It might lace the glass.
He offered his glass to her with a smile, one that held a little more warmth this time, humour that seemed sad to her somehow. “I would not trust me either.”
Nina took the glass from him, her fingers brushing his as she wrapped them around the icy tumbler. Heat shot up her arm and she almost dropped the glass when he snatched his hand away. Had he felt it too?
She couldn’t bring herself to look at him as he paced away from her. She stared at the tumbler, at the spot on the other side where his lips had pressed, leaving an imprint on the polished glass. Her stomach heated. Flipped. She crushed the ridiculous urge to turn the glass around and press her lips there too and drank a mouthful from it instead. The cool water was bliss as it ran over her tongue and down her throat, instantly soothing her. Heaven.
“How long have I been here?” His rich voice swirled around her as she took another few sips and she felt his eyes on her again, burning her with their intensity and stirring the heat in her veins.
Nina slowly lifted her gaze back to his face and paused with the glass at her lips, the ripple of heat in her veins becoming a flood of wildfire as she found him staring at her mouth. The dark abysses of his pupils devoured the gold of his irises before he pulled his eyes away from her lips and raised them to lock with hers.
“I have been here a very long time.”
She stared at him as those words sank in. He didn’t look much older than she was, maybe just a couple of years closer to forty. Had he been working here his entire life?
Had he grown up in this grim place?
It would explain the edge he had about him at times, the dark and cold side of him that made her nervous.
That made her feel he had secrets locked deep in his heart.
Secrets as painful as the ones in hers.

I gulped. It wasn’t a question and I didn’t hesitate. I twisted my body and lifted my leg over his lap, situating myself across his thighs. I wiggled a little to get comfortable.
He grabbed my hips and pulled me closer, grinding my sex against his hard length. My body throbbed and my panties were soaked in seconds. Taking a deep breath, I focused on slowing my racing heart and trembling body. What I thought would be an uncomfortable bite and awkward aftermath had turned into something completely different.
Fire licked at my belly and I swayed my hips, allowing his hands to guide the movement. Another growl rumbled from his chest. His hands abandoned my waist and slid upward, grazing my breasts and then over my shoulders. He cupped each side of my face and pulled me closer, kissing me slowly. His tongue grazed first my top lip then my bottom, then plunged between them, sweeping inside. It was euphoric. He tasted sweet and I opened further for him.
My gesture did not go unnoticed and I received an encouraging gravelly moan as a reward. He sucked and nipped at my lips again before trailing his kisses slowly across my jaw and down the side of my neck below my ear. His right hand caressed the nape of my neck and grasped the base of the loose braid of my hair. He pulled my head gently to the side, further exposing my neck and collarbone to his hungry mouth.
My heart raced again. The bite had to be coming soon. I leaned into his kisses, pushing my neck closer. Something had changed in my mind. I no longer feared the bite. Instead, I desperately wanted it.

Publisher: Lyrical Press/Kensington Publishing Corp.
Date of Publication: August 4, 2014
Number of pages: 129
Word Count: 45,000
Cover Artist: Fiona Jayde
What happens when monsters turn out to be real? One summer night while camping in the woods, Morgan Carter finds out in a big way. A tall mysterious stranger, Greyson Crawford, risks his life to try and save her sister from the vicious wolf attacking their camp. When he’s bitten and disappears into the night, Morgan can only assume the worst.
Greyson shows up a year later, and he’s a different animal altogether. His eye color shifts constantly and the rumble in his throat sounds more animal than human. She hasn’t any idea where he’s been all this time, but a good guess as to what he’s become.
Grey is determined not to let the darkness of his new existence affect Morgan and the little girl in her care. He hasn’t been able to stop thinking about Morgan but knows he should stay away and let her live a normal life. That’s easier said than done, though. A new danger pulls him from the shadows to keep her safe, and he’s no wolf in sheep’s clothing.
Can she accept what lurks just below his surface? More importantly, can she survive him?

Grey’s arms and legs were on fire, burning from his very veins, blistering every nerve ending on the way out. Why was the pain tearing through his chest? He tried to hail the woman but nothing came out except a quiet groan. Was he dying? He arched his neck toward her sister. Her body was so mangled it was all but unrecognizable as human. The girl’s eyes were open, fixed, staring back at him. She was dead. Would he die, too? What was that thing? That monster?
Maybe this was all a dream. Maybe he still slept, back in his campsite a quarter of a mile away. He’d been sleeping there only a few minutes ago. Maybe he was just having a vivid night terror and he’d wake at any moment to the relief that this wasn’t real. The girl slid over to him, but he was already panting in pain. Fire in his blood burned him up.
Her mouth moved, but he couldn’t hear anything over the roaring in his ears. Like helicopter blades, the sound drowned out everything. Her lips were full, and when his vision blurred, he tried to focus on her face. She was beautiful. Tiny. Delicate like a hummingbird. Even through spilling tears, the moss green color of her eyes was clear and compelling.
Her voice overcame the screeching in his ears. “What’s your name?”
“Greyson,” he rasped. “Greyson Crawford.” Someone should know who he was. Notify Dad what had happened there in the woods of Enchanted Rock. “What’s yours?” It was getting so hard to breathe. He had to know. He’d leave the world on her name.
“Morgan. My name’s Morgan.”

Please join us in congratulating Sharon Kay on her new release Wicked Flames, the 3rd book in the Solsti Prophecy series. Sharon has stopped by VRB to let us pry for a little while by answering some questions. Not only that, but Sharon didn’t stop there, she is also offering 2 very lucky readers a chance to win their own copies of Wicked Flames! Be sure to enter the Rafflecopter giveaway at the end of the interview. Now, without further ado, I give you Sharon Kay.
Hi Sharon! Welcome to Vampire Romance Books, I am happy you could join us and answer some questions for the fans! Hello! I’m excited to be here today!
Let us start with the personal stuff *rubs hands together* Why don’t you tell us a bit about yourself, like where are you from or how do you feel about Lima beans. Haha, I’ll pass on the Lima beans! I will accept truckloads of Oreos and gallons of black coffee, though. I live near Chicago and I love it – love all the seasons, even winter. Well, especially winter, and I seem to be in the minority around here!
When you aren’t writing what do you enjoy doing? I have a young son, and we are having a blast right now doing all kinds of outdoor stuff together. Summers are short here, so we pack a lot of activities into these couple months!
If you could travel anywhere in the world where would it be, and why? Oh, this is so tough! I just created a Pinterest board called “Places I need to go” and it has over 100 pins already! Ok, let me think…My ideal vacation involves a tropical beach, so I’d say anywhere in the Caribbean, maybe the Virgin Islands.
*Wicked grin* Most embarrassing moment, or would you like to take a pass on that? Just kidding, we’re not going to let you take a pass. Haha! I am a complete dork so I have LOTS of embarrassing moments. Hmm…once when I was fourteen, my best friend and I tried to bake a frozen pizza in my parents’ oven, and we put it in upside down!
OK, I am getting serious now. What inspired you to write, and why the paranormal genre? I LOVE paranormal romance. It’s almost all I read, so creating characters with special powers came fairly easily. Any—this may sound weird—but my characters inspired me to write their story. I didn’t plan to write a novel…the story kind of found me, and kept me writing.
Are your family and friends supportive of your writing, have they read your books? They are all supportive, for which I am grateful! About half have read my books. The rest aren’t huge fans of “things that can’t happen in real life” as they put it. (Translation: They prefer non-fiction.) And that’s fine. Everyone has their preferences.
For our readers who aren’t familiar with the Solsti Prophecy books, would you give them a summary? The Solsti are four women who each control one of the elements: Air, water, fire, and earth. They grew up thinking they’re human who happen to have unusual powers, until one night two of them run into a demon warrior. Their true lineage is revealed, and also the fact that they exist to fight an enemy yet unseen, but more powerful than anything in all the realms. As each woman’s powers grow, they work closely with the demon males (cue sparks and sizzle)! Oh, and the three sisters had a fourth sister, who died when she was very young…yet the Elders state that all four Solsti exist. But who and where is she? *grins* The series will have four novels when it’s complete.
What gave you the idea for the series? The idea formed in my head one weekend a few years ago, out of the blue, and I HAD to start writing Wicked Wind. I couldn’t sit still until I did.
I am madly in love with the Lash Demon Kai from Wicked Waves. I think he should have been mine *winks*. Do you have a favorite character? If so, who is it and what do you love about them? Hmm, Kai appreciates the extra attention! But I can’t pick one favorite! I seriously want to go to Demon Central and hang out with all of them. Maybe pick up some MMA-style self-defense moves from Brooke and Nicole.
You have just released Wicked Flames. What is next for you, and can we have a hint? Next up this fall is my first novella, called Kissed By A Demon Spy. It’s about Garnet, a minor character from Wicked Waves. Her page time in the novel was minimal, but her significance was HUGE, and I never had a chance to explain what happened to her. Oh, and in January, I’ll release the fourth Solsti book! (And reveal where she has been all this time!)
What advice would you give to aspiring writers? Remember it’s a marathon, not a sprint. Investigate the publishing industry, both traditional and indie, so that you’re as informed as you can be when you decide which direction to go. And most importantly, JUST WRITE if you have an idea that won’t be quiet. Don’t stop to edit until you’re done with the rough draft – just get those words on paper!
What do you feel are the most effective ways of promoting yourself and your books? I find that having 99 cent sales is an effective tool, since we all love a deal. Also, emails targeted to those who want news about paranormal romance are helpful.
It seems as though social media is essential for any author or other businesses for that matter. How do you feel about social media? Yes, social media is essential and also fun, but can take up a lot of time if we aren’t careful (cough *Pinterest* cough)! But I LOVE being able to connect with readers. You know, hearing about everyone’s favorite books, book boyfriends, movies, junk food, the weather…anything goes!

Is there anything you would like to add or say to your fans? Just that you guys are the best, and I appreciate whenever you take time to leave me a comment or a review! Without you, this series wouldn’t have continued past the first book, so XOXO!
Sharon, thank you so much for stopping by VRB and talking to us. I wish you the best of luck with the release of Wicked Flames, and I hope you will visit with us again. It’s been fun, thank you for having me!

Sharon lives in the Chicago area with her husband and son, and didn’t expect to write one book,
let alone a series. But WICKED WIND and the Solsti series formed in her head one weekend
and refused to stay quiet until she put pen to paper. Her characters tend to keep her up at night,
as they banter, fall in love, and slay endless varieties of power-hungry demons.

Best-selling ROMANCE with Paranormal, Sci-fi, and Fantasy Flair.
If you’re looking for something new and different in PNR, you’ve come to the right place.
I write unapologetic romances with uniquely fresh perspectives on paranormal creatures, characters, and themes. Add a dash of scifi and a flourish of fantasy to enough humor to make you laugh out loud and enough steam to make you squirm in your chair. My heroines are independent femmes with flaws and minds of their own whether they are aliens, witches, demonologists, psychics, or past life therapists. My heroes are hot and hunky, but they also have brains, character, and good manners – usually – whether they be elves, demons, berserkers, werewolves, or vampires.
I have authored and illustrated Seasons of the Witch calendars and planners for fifteen years and teach magickal arts for Seasons in Avalon. I live in The Woodlands, Texas which is why I sometimes joke about being the witch in the woods.
TIME FOR CONFESSION!!!
Being an author’s assistant is a job like no other: Exciting, fulfilling, and, at times, crazy! We work for an Indie author, Victoria Danann, which adds another level of challenge to the mix. Without a big publisher behind us, we work on her behalf to get the word out about her amazing books.
Here’s our first confession: Neither of us has worked as an author’s assistant before! We were both fans first, as well as being members of her street team. She mentioned one day that she was looking for a new assistant, and both of us replied. Being a smart woman, Victoria realized how amazing we both are. So, instead of choosing one, she hired us both! Now the three of us are blazing our own trail in the wild world of Indie publishing.
Our most important functions are managing Victoria’s social media and the street team, which is a group of some of the most devoted Victoria fans around. The street team is one of our most important keys to getting the word out about the Black Swan serial saga. We also work with Bloggers and Facebookers to feature or promote Victoria’s books, keep track of her calendar, and organize events such as giveaways. There are a lot of moving parts that require a tremendous amount of organization and detail supervision. Through a semi-complicated structure of file sharing and online chat, the three of us are able to work as a team so that each of us always knows what the other is doing.
Once people find out about and read Victoria’s first book, My Familiar Stranger, which is free everywhere, they usually join the rest of us in being fans of her work. We really love that her books are a mix of paranormal romance and fantasy, genres that we both really enjoy reading. It’s so fun working for someone you admire – Any task that helps her out is something we’re glad to do.
We’re commonly asked the following questions:
How’d you get the job?
Sarah: I had been on her Street Team for about a month when the opportunity came up that she needed an assistant. I sent her an email about all the things I had done in the past, reasons why I would be a great assistant. I was SO nervous waiting for the response! But, as you can see, I am here!
Judy: One day, on the street team page, Victoria mentioned that she needed an assistant. I contacted her to offer to help her out in the meantime, but it turns out I was in the right place at the right time, and started working for her! The learning curve has been pretty steep – there is so much about the author world that is so very different from the experience of a reader. I love this job! I get to utilize every skill I’ve learned over the years and apply them in unique and creative ways.
Sarah: You’re right, it is crazy different as far as how it measures up to any other job I have, but I would never trade it!
Judy: I’m constantly amazed that I get to do what I do. I learn so much every day. I didn’t realize how bored I was before. Seriously.
How did you know that the street team idea would even work?
Judy: The idea of a street team isn’t really new. It started in the music industry with a literal street team handing out fliers about a new music group. The concept has evolved now into street teams for all kinds of things. Feedback I get from members of Victoria’s street team is that this is one of the most active groups for an author. Our team has regular blogs that they work with to help spread the word. Having a hangout on Facebook with a private page for our group has been really great for building our team identity.
Sarah: Victoria had the Street Team before I became her assistant. I think it’s a great idea for many different reasons. Her biggest fans get time to chat with her whenever they like, they know her better than her other readers do. They also get the opportunity to get her new books about 2 weeks before everyone else. This helps both them and Victoria as she gets feedback before the release date. It is also a great advertising tool as we have wonderful Street Team members that will help get the word out about anything!
What is the most rewarding aspect of being an author’s assistant?
Sarah: This one is hard to explain. Being Victoria’s assistant is a reward in itself. I get to talk to her daily, manage a fantastic Street Team, and meet some really incredible people. All the while knowing that I am helping a writing genius get the time to do what she does best!
Judy: The most rewarding thing about this job is that I get to help an author I truly admire. It just feels so good knowing that my work in the background enables her to have time to write her amazing books.
Sarah; She’s right; I know Victoria is writing fantastic things and that makes me extremely happy!
Judy: I love it every time Sarah says, “She’s right,” when she’s talking about me! It happens a lot.
How many hours a week/day do you spend on this job?
Sarah: A lot. But in no way can I complain. Most of the Street Team says they see me online, all the time, no matter what time it is. Well, I LOVE what I do. And a lot of my part of the job includes Facebook, so I’m on there for my stuff and book stuff all the time. Plus keeping track of what 50 people do takes up some time!!
Judy: It’s really impossible to calculate. I know I work the equivalent of office hours daily, and then check in again at night. I try to avoid working on the weekends, but when stuff is happening, I’m on whenever I need to be. This job for me is a blend of fan/ employee – it’s definitely more a labor of love….but it is nice to get paid!
Sarah: Wait… You get paid??
So, what’s the dirt? Any scoops you can share?
Judy: Wow! Way to put us on the spot. Part of being an assistant is protecting the person you work for. My boss probably won’t fire me for saying that she put a photo of herself on Facebook once – she was swimming – I noticed no clothing in the picture, and asked her about if – to which she replied, “haha”. Yep. That’s the kind of crazy I’m lucky enough to work with every day. I love her.
Sarah: She’s got a wicked crazy sense of humor….and she and I get one another’s jokes, while Judy is often left scratching her head!
Judy: Hey! I get some of the jokes….sometimes.
Blazing a new trail in the world of Indy book publishing is exciting and fun. There is some seriously hard work involved, but it’s hard to really take note of that when we’re having such a good time! Being coworkers that truly enjoy and admire, not only our boss, but one another, makes every workday fun and entertaining. We both like meeting new people, learning new things, and we’re pretty good at sharing the load. We don’t know how Victoria got along without us!

A bit about the Pyte/Sentinal Series Pytes live in a world where their immortality, strength, speed and
ability to withstand the sun should make them gods on earth. Instead
they are forced to live in fear. Their ability to create a stronger more
powerful army of vampires has Master Vampires all over the world waging
wars to find them and Sentinels determined to get them.
Even as they fight for their freedom they know that one day they’ll have to choose a side….
of years ago a war was started on earth between God and Lucifer after
Lucifer left the confines of Hell to steal much needed human souls.
of anger, God punished Lucifer, sealing him in Hell and away from his
children. God decreed that as long as there was even one human soul left
on earth, Lucifer could not leave Hell. Knowing that he couldn’t
outright destroy God’s precious children without feeling God’s wrath,
Lucifer did the only thing he was allowed, he released one Vladerc demon
He used God’s rules against him not caring that once
the demon was released he could not release another. It didn’t matter.
He’d chosen well. The Vladerc demon not only fed on humans stealing
their souls, but the demon could also turn humans into hybrid Vladercs
who would steal more human souls until only his demons inhabited the
earth freeing him. Free Will stopped God from interfering on Earth
leaving Lucifer’s demon to spread his disease.
Or so he thought….
the rules to his advantage God sent five of his elite Angel warriors to
earth every ten years. To keep them from becoming too powerful or
easily detected by Lucifer’s children he split their souls in half and
merged each half with a human soul. He named them Sentinels for they
protected his greatest treasure, his children. He blessed them with
longevity, strength, speed and the only thing he could think of to thank
them for their sacrifice as well as keep them loyal to him….
A soul mate.
A Neighbor From Hell Series
Coming November 1St
A Bit about The Neighbor From Hell Series
Every neighborhood, whether it’s located in the best part of town or
across the tracks has one very important thing in common: they all have
the one neighbor that you wish you could club upside the head, throw in
the back of your trunk, and dump a hundred miles into the woods all
while giggling hysterically and promising yourself that this time would
be different, this time he wouldn’t find his way back. You know who I’m
It’s the person that steals your newspaper, lets
his dog walk on your freshly mowed lawn, blasts their music at all hours
of the night, steals your parking spot, leaves their alarm clock
blasting twenty-four seven and just annoys the living hell out of you.
What if I told you that this person really wasn’t so bad once you got to
know him and that by the time I’m done spinning you a tale that not
only will you find all of his quirks endearing, but that you’ll fall
head over heels in love with him? What would you say then?
Don’t believe me? Well, I guess there’s only one way to find out. Check out my Neighbor From Hell series and see for yourself
A Bit about The EMS Series
Working in EMS can be one of the most exciting jobs of your life. It
can also be one of the most stressful experiences of your life. Long
hours, being held over at the last second, horrible pay, close calls,
and patience that drive you to drink, but what it really comes down to
is your partner. A good partner can make your day fly by while a bad
partner can make you contemplate manslaughter.
Come along for the ride with R.L. Mathewson’s EMS series and experience it for yourself.
A bit about the Hollywood Hearts Series
Being rich and famous is great. Everyone loves you and wants to be
you. Life should be perfect, and it is, except for a few minor issues
like not being able to make a run down to the corner store without being
the target of paparazzi, fans harass you wherever you go, you can’t go
anywhere without a bodyguard, you can’t figure out who your real friends
are or if you even have any and the fake smile you plaster on your face
every morning is starting to hurt.
No matter what you do, how
much money you have and how many fans scream your name you can’t help
but feel like something is missing. A Hollywood Hearts series just might
be the answer to all of your problems. If you don’t mind a few genuine
smiles, a few laughs, steamy love scenes and maybe a tear or two then
this series just might be what you’re looking for.
There was something seriously wrong with Marty. That was the only
explanation that she could come up with. Why else would she feel this
way for the biggest SOB in town? Granted, he was also the hottest man in
town, but he was also arrogant, callous, and determined to drive her
away even as he drove her crazy with his touch. She should just walk
away from him and probably would if it wasn’t for this connection that
she’d always had with him that kept making her want more with the one
man that couldn’t give her anything more than heartache.
should have left and never looked back when he’d decided to finally do
the right thing and push Marty out of his life, but instead he stuck
around to torture himself by staying close to the one woman that he
could never allow himself to have. She deserved better than him, better
than the tortured existence that he led and better than the horrifying
future that waited for him.

I am very proud to be a part of Lauren Grimley’s Romance For a Reason tour. I hope that you will follow along with the tour all month for chances to win prizes, learn ways you can help, and of course purchase Lauren’s book Unbridled. She is donating the proceeds from each book to two very important charities, V-Day and The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Below you will find a teaser from the book as well as information on ways you can help! I’d like to thank Lauren for bringing attention to both of these groups as I’ve been personally affected by both as have many other women!
Unbridled: A collection of short stories from the Alex Crocker series
By Lauren Grimley
“Think Law and Order SUV meets The Breakfast Club” was Ellie’s trite explanation of what Alex had been dragged into. Add a few fangs, Fifty Shades of Oversharing, and a dash of Dr. Phil, and she was in for quite a Thursday night.
Alex couldn’t deny she had become the pint-sized poster child for PTSD lately, but she didn’t exactly expect to find a support group for teachers turned vampire chew toys in Bristol, MA. Listening to the tales of the four other females gathered to help her heal, however, she accepts that perhaps both the worst and the best of life can blossom from the unexpected.
Unbridled is a novella-length collection of four connected stories focusing on the unlikely friendships and less likely lovers of the female characters from the Alex Crocker series.
“Grace and Dignity”
Even a female whose mating has been arranged most of her life still thinks about what she wants in a mate. Not one of the qualities Sarah had hoped for were easily evident in her betrothed, the future Regan of the Rectinatti coven. Perhaps, though, there were more layers to Darian than he liked to reveal, but how does a subject unmask a prince?
“Rules and Recollections”
Bristol, Massachusetts, 1902
You can’t fall in love with someone you barely recall, but that, Vivian supposed, was the point. After a terse meeting with the Knower, a mind reader, memory manipulator, and the coven’s most notorious lecher, Vivian isn’t herself. She can’t shake the feeling that the solution to her mood lurks just below the surface of her consciousness. Only plunging into darkness, though, will bring everything to light.
“Blood and Secrecy”
Bristol, Massachusetts, 2008
The shared need for blood brought them together, but individual desires for secrecy are keeping them apart. Each already left behind a life of privilege for reasons the other likely couldn’t understand. Now both Rocky and Ellie need to decide if they’re willing to open up about their pasts in order to ensure a future.
Series: Alex Crocker series, can definitely be enjoyed without reading the first two books in the series, but is written to fit after the events of book 2, Unveiled.
Genres: paranormal romance, vampire series, urban fantasy, short stories
Release date: October 1, 2013
Available formats: ebook & paperback (184 pages)
Website page: http://www.laurengrimley.com/Unbridled.html
Or for those who want just a bite, three of the individual stories are available as well:
“Grace and Dignity”
“Rules and Recollections”
“Blood and Secrecy”
For the other books and stories in the series see Lauren’s Amazon Author page: http://www.amazon.com/-/e/B007Y5ZZSG
Paperback (Amazon only, it’s not yet linked to the e-book): http://www.amazon.com/Unbridled-Collection-Short-Stories-Crocker/dp/0615861113
While I was writing these stories, it occurred to me that, although I was focusing more on the romance this time, I was once again creating some tenacious heroines who’d all faced varying degrees of adversity. I wondered vaguely if I could perhaps publish these tales myself in order to donate the proceeds to women’s charities who help such real-life women. Then, just as I was finishing a rough draft of the project, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer for a second time. And for the second time in my life I wanted to do something, anything, to help support her and other women facing the same terrifying challenge. My knees no longer allow me to do the kind of training needed to complete a second triathlon for my mom, as I had the first time around. Besides, in the years since high school I’d found another passion: writing.
Combining my love of story telling, strong heroines, and girl power, I came up with the idea for Romance for a Reason. It is one small step I can take to help end some rather formidable issues facing women: breast cancer and violence. I’m hoping others will take it with me this month, making October (National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and National Domestic Violence Awareness Month) a month of celebrating women’s strength and beauty.
How you can help:
Read some romance. Proceeds from Unbridled will be donated to the two charities listed here.
Donate. Make your own individual donation to these two charities or choose a local charity supporting these and other causes affecting women in your area. To learn more about each charity and my reasons for choosing them, visit the Romance for a Reason page. Or click through to donate directly.
The Breast Cancer Research Foundation
Host. Gather the women (and men!) of your book club or just a group of friends for a Romance for Reason party. Party ideas? Check out my blog for ideas on how to plan your gathering. Then download the Romance Reading Questionnaire and/or the Body Lingo Bingo for some fun party activities!
Share. Tweet, status update, review, or just chat with friends about the books, the tour, and the charities (mine or yours)!
It’s not about the money we raise, the miles we run (or slowly plod), or even the strong females we read and write about. It’s about recognizing there’s something, anything, we can do, and doing it. For me it was writing and sharing some feminist romance with fangs. What will you do to change the colors of fall from red and orange to purple and pink?

Dating a Jaguar Shifter
Wade Patterson’s Testimony
Transcribed by Terry Spear
Have you ever considered dating a jaguar shifter?
We’re meat lovers. As a jaguar, that’s ALL we eat. No lettuce salads. But because we are human also, we do eat our veggies.
But if you want to win over a jaguar shifter, make sure you order meat lover’s pizza. A steak or two is good. Love fish.
We love to swim, so if you have an idea for a fun romp to a watering hole—lake, pond, river, beach, shower, hot tub, waterfall, we’re game. Water is great for fishing, cooling off, and… heating up.
If you need some protection, you’ve got it. Old boyfriend pestering you? Won’t be a problem. Even humans can sense when a jaguar shifter’s being territorial and doesn’t want the old game to make trouble for his ex. They might not be able to smell our hot-wired emotions, but they can see the predatory gleam in our eyes, and the ready-to-pounce posture that says, “Back off, buster, or else.”
If you want some kitty cat loving—the BIG variety—we’ve got it.
We’re wild as in like to visit the rainforest for a run on the wild side. Well, most of us do. A few are citified jaguars. So if you want someone who’s on the tamer side, we have some of those also. But if you want to visit the jungle, choose a wild shifter. We know the ropes and can teach you all the tricks of surviving in the jungle. That includes knowing where all the best water romps are, too. All work and no play makes the jaguar shifter one dull cat.
Like to dance? I know a great jaguar shifter club for dancing.
Did I mention being a little territorial? Even the pure jaguars are like that. But they claim a couple of she-cats for mates and a territory that encompasses both of theirs. Our human side dictates we have more monogamous relations. Not that a few don’t act more like a cat on the prowl. But the good guys like to make it a happily ever after for those with cat scratch fever.
Ever love to climb a tree in your youth? We enjoy getting off the ground and perch high above, watching the world pass us by.
In the big cat world, the she-cat takes care of her cubs. But you better believe male jaguar shifters are just as protective of the she-cat as they are of their offspring. And yes, that means changing diapers. Not that I’m faced with that prospect yet, but in the future, I’m sure of it.
And that’s about all I can say for now on the dating aspects when getting interested in a jaguar shifter.
One lucky commenter will win a copy of A Highland Werewolf Wedding, US/Canada only, just answer a question:
Which water source would be your favorite place to meet up with a jaguar shifter, and what appeals so much about it?
JAGUAR FEVER BY TERRY SPEAR – IN STORES AUGUST 2013
She’s being pursued by everyone, in more ways than one.
Even in an exotic world of humans, jaguars, and tantalizing creatures who shift between the two, Maya Anderson stands out from the crowd. Interest from human suitors is bad enough, but when male shifters give chase, the real trouble starts.
Who’s the hunter and who’s the prey?
Investigating the black marketing trade of exotic animals keeps Wade Patterson more than busy. When he and Maya both get entangled in a steamy jungle mission, it becomes impossible to tell who is being hunted or who the hunters are. Wade is desperate to survive this deadly game of cat and mouse. But it’s Maya’s piercing eyes that keep him awake at night.

Publisher: Ellora’s Cave
Themes: Historical: Regency, Vampire
Description:Tired of the thin-blooded aristocrats in 1815 London, Alexius yearns
for better sport. He is drawn to a dark-haired seductress who shows no
fear and refuses to obey his commands. Entranced by such novelty, he
denies his bloodlust and decides to keep her to warm his bed.
Immortal vampire hunter Morana has never mistaken her prey before,
but the dark stranger mesmerizes her, enticing her to forget
everything but the dangerous pleasure she finds in his arms.
Neither one can deny the pull of the other, but there is something
beyond the lust—a recognition neither can put a name to. The past
and present collide and unless they discover the truth behind the
lies, Death will triumph once more.
I am pleased to present Christina Phillips to VampireRomanceBooks.com. She is joining us today to talk about her newest book Bloodlust Denied among other things.
Hello Christina! Thank you for taking the time to talk with us today!
Hi Rhonda and Teresa! Thank you so much for having me on Vampire Romance Books today!
Will you tell the readers a little about yourself?
I’m an ex-pat Brit, now living in sunny Western Australia just a couple of minutes stroll from the beach. I have one husband and three children, and three cats who feel it’s their duty to sit as close to the laptop as possible whenever I’m writing. They also enjoy running off with my sticky notes and pens.
I read in your bio that you began writing stories about spaceships and time travel at the age of eight, is that a genre you still like to read?
Yes I do! It’s probably just one of the many reasons why I’m so obsessed with Battlestar Galactica (not a book I know, but I’m such a fangirl J ) Although the stories I wrote as a teenager were full of angst and thwarted love, they always contained some weird element of the paranormal. Now days I love to read PNR and fantasy romance because I must have my HEA!
When did you first get bit by the romance bug? Do you remember the first romance book you read?
I was about 10 when a friend brought in some Barbara Cartland books to school. I was hooked from the first moment! Beautiful heroines and strong heroes and a chaste kiss or two and I was in heaven. Then when I was 11 I read Wuthering Heights and it blew my mind. It was only years later it finally hit me the reason why that book left such an impression. It had paranormal elements! But not the HEA I craved, that’s for sure!
Can you tell the readers a little bit about Bloodlust denied?
I’d love to! The idea for Bloodlust Denied first came to me about four years ago when I read a submissions call from Ellora’s Cave for stories connected to music. I instantly had this vision of a dark haired seductress dancing to the haunting strains of a single violin in a London back alley. I’d wanted to write a Regency romance for ages, and the two ideas melded when the hero entered the scene. However, he was no ordinary duke. He turned out to be a two thousand year old vampire who had long ago forsaken his honor and conscience. As it turned out I never did submit to EC four years ago as I missed the deadline due to other commitments, but the story always remained in the back of my mind. Eventually I revisited it last year, gave it a good edit and it was picked up by Ellora’s Cave J
I read Bloodlust Denied, and let me put it out there for everyone, that is one STEAMY read! How do family and friends respond to the erotic side of your books?
Very well, actually. When I first started writing (non-erotic romance) an acquaintance did make a dig about me writing “bodice rippers”. But on the whole everyone has been very accepting. I was especially thrilled when my mother-in-law wrote to tell me how much she enjoyed my Roman/Druid romances!
My two daughters have been very supportive of my writing, but as far as I know they haven’t read any of my books. Because I’m their mother and I guess I shouldn’t know about sex and stuff like that J
My husband is also very supportive and has even read a couple of my books, but I’m sure he wonders where exactly I get my ideas from. Heh heh!
Bloodlust Denied takes place in 1815. If you brought Alexius out to play, what do you think he would think about the world today? How would he fit in?
Alexius has been a vampire for two thousand years and during that time has seen huge changes in the world around him. Throughout it all he’s not only survived but flourished and I know he’d soon adapt to the modern world. In fact I think he’d relish all our mod cons! I can see him being a very successful tycoon!
Tell us about some of your other works. Do you have a favorite?
I do have a very soft spot for my Roman/Druid romances. These books are set during the first century when the Romans invaded Britain, but each book is a stand alone. I love exploring the forbidden love between my sexy warriors and their magical Druid heroines, as well as the powerful gods and goddesses who have no intention of fading quietly into the mists of time. The third book set in this world, Betrayed, was recently released by Ellora’s Cave and the fourth one, Tainted, should be out before the end of the year.
What is the writing process like for you? Do you have a set time to write or do you get an idea and run to the nearest computer?
I write every day on my books, either new work, revisions, editing or promotional stuff. When a new idea comes to me I’ll scribble down a few notes so I don’t forget, but I don’t start a new story until my current one is done.
If you could collaborate with any author who would it be?
Before I was published, quite early on in my writing journey, I did collaborate on a couple of books with another author. It was enjoyable and I learned a lot but I’m not sure I’d ever want to go through the process again.
What are you currently working on?
At the moment I’m working on the second book in my Highland Warrior Chronicles. These books have been acquired by Ellora’s Cave and feature gorgeous Scot warriors and their brave Pictish princesses. The books are set in the ninth century during the turbulent time when both Scot and Viking coveted Pictland so there’s plenty of juicy conflict! I have the unedited blurb of Her Savage Scot up on my website if you want a sneak peek
Where can fans go to see what you are up to?
I love to chat to readers and you can find me at the following links on the web:
Christina, thank you once again for stopping by VRB and letting us grill you! Is there anything you would like to add or say to the readers out there?
It’s been my pleasure! I’d love to offer a giveaway of an e-copy of Bloodlust Denied to one commenter on this post. Just leave a comment or let me know who your fave vampire is (from book, screen or TV. Or real life…)
