What happens when monsters turn out to be real? One summer night while camping in the woods, Morgan Carter finds out in a big way. A tall mysterious stranger, Greyson Crawford, risks his life to try and save her sister from the vicious wolf attacking their camp. When he’s bitten and disappears into the night, Morgan can only assume the worst.
Greyson shows up a year later, and he’s a different animal altogether. His eye color shifts constantly and the rumble in his throat sounds more animal than human. She hasn’t any idea where he’s been all this time, but a good guess as to what he’s become.
Grey is determined not to let the darkness of his new existence affect Morgan and the little girl in her care. He hasn’t been able to stop thinking about Morgan but knows he should stay away and let her live a normal life. That’s easier said than done, though. A new danger pulls him from the shadows to keep her safe, and he’s no wolf in sheep’s clothing.
Can she accept what lurks just below his surface? More importantly, can she survive him?

Grey’s arms and legs were on fire, burning from his very veins, blistering every nerve ending on the way out. Why was the pain tearing through his chest? He tried to hail the woman but nothing came out except a quiet groan. Was he dying? He arched his neck toward her sister. Her body was so mangled it was all but unrecognizable as human. The girl’s eyes were open, fixed, staring back at him. She was dead. Would he die, too? What was that thing? That monster?
Maybe this was all a dream. Maybe he still slept, back in his campsite a quarter of a mile away. He’d been sleeping there only a few minutes ago. Maybe he was just having a vivid night terror and he’d wake at any moment to the relief that this wasn’t real. The girl slid over to him, but he was already panting in pain. Fire in his blood burned him up.
Her mouth moved, but he couldn’t hear anything over the roaring in his ears. Like helicopter blades, the sound drowned out everything. Her lips were full, and when his vision blurred, he tried to focus on her face. She was beautiful. Tiny. Delicate like a hummingbird. Even through spilling tears, the moss green color of her eyes was clear and compelling.
Her voice overcame the screeching in his ears. “What’s your name?”
“Greyson,” he rasped. “Greyson Crawford.” Someone should know who he was. Notify Dad what had happened there in the woods of Enchanted Rock. “What’s yours?” It was getting so hard to breathe. He had to know. He’d leave the world on her name.
“Morgan. My name’s Morgan.”

Please join us in congratulating Sharon Kay on her new release Wicked Flames, the 3rd book in the Solsti Prophecy series. Sharon has stopped by VRB to let us pry for a little while by answering some questions. Not only that, but Sharon didn’t stop there, she is also offering 2 very lucky readers a chance to win their own copies of Wicked Flames! Be sure to enter the Rafflecopter giveaway at the end of the interview. Now, without further ado, I give you Sharon Kay.
Hi Sharon! Welcome to Vampire Romance Books, I am happy you could join us and answer some questions for the fans! Hello! I’m excited to be here today!
Let us start with the personal stuff *rubs hands together* Why don’t you tell us a bit about yourself, like where are you from or how do you feel about Lima beans. Haha, I’ll pass on the Lima beans! I will accept truckloads of Oreos and gallons of black coffee, though. I live near Chicago and I love it – love all the seasons, even winter. Well, especially winter, and I seem to be in the minority around here!
When you aren’t writing what do you enjoy doing? I have a young son, and we are having a blast right now doing all kinds of outdoor stuff together. Summers are short here, so we pack a lot of activities into these couple months!
If you could travel anywhere in the world where would it be, and why? Oh, this is so tough! I just created a Pinterest board called “Places I need to go” and it has over 100 pins already! Ok, let me think…My ideal vacation involves a tropical beach, so I’d say anywhere in the Caribbean, maybe the Virgin Islands.
*Wicked grin* Most embarrassing moment, or would you like to take a pass on that? Just kidding, we’re not going to let you take a pass. Haha! I am a complete dork so I have LOTS of embarrassing moments. Hmm…once when I was fourteen, my best friend and I tried to bake a frozen pizza in my parents’ oven, and we put it in upside down!
OK, I am getting serious now. What inspired you to write, and why the paranormal genre? I LOVE paranormal romance. It’s almost all I read, so creating characters with special powers came fairly easily. Any—this may sound weird—but my characters inspired me to write their story. I didn’t plan to write a novel…the story kind of found me, and kept me writing.
Are your family and friends supportive of your writing, have they read your books? They are all supportive, for which I am grateful! About half have read my books. The rest aren’t huge fans of “things that can’t happen in real life” as they put it. (Translation: They prefer non-fiction.) And that’s fine. Everyone has their preferences.
For our readers who aren’t familiar with the Solsti Prophecy books, would you give them a summary? The Solsti are four women who each control one of the elements: Air, water, fire, and earth. They grew up thinking they’re human who happen to have unusual powers, until one night two of them run into a demon warrior. Their true lineage is revealed, and also the fact that they exist to fight an enemy yet unseen, but more powerful than anything in all the realms. As each woman’s powers grow, they work closely with the demon males (cue sparks and sizzle)! Oh, and the three sisters had a fourth sister, who died when she was very young…yet the Elders state that all four Solsti exist. But who and where is she? *grins* The series will have four novels when it’s complete.
What gave you the idea for the series? The idea formed in my head one weekend a few years ago, out of the blue, and I HAD to start writing Wicked Wind. I couldn’t sit still until I did.
I am madly in love with the Lash Demon Kai from Wicked Waves. I think he should have been mine *winks*. Do you have a favorite character? If so, who is it and what do you love about them? Hmm, Kai appreciates the extra attention! But I can’t pick one favorite! I seriously want to go to Demon Central and hang out with all of them. Maybe pick up some MMA-style self-defense moves from Brooke and Nicole.
You have just released Wicked Flames. What is next for you, and can we have a hint? Next up this fall is my first novella, called Kissed By A Demon Spy. It’s about Garnet, a minor character from Wicked Waves. Her page time in the novel was minimal, but her significance was HUGE, and I never had a chance to explain what happened to her. Oh, and in January, I’ll release the fourth Solsti book! (And reveal where she has been all this time!)
What advice would you give to aspiring writers? Remember it’s a marathon, not a sprint. Investigate the publishing industry, both traditional and indie, so that you’re as informed as you can be when you decide which direction to go. And most importantly, JUST WRITE if you have an idea that won’t be quiet. Don’t stop to edit until you’re done with the rough draft – just get those words on paper!
What do you feel are the most effective ways of promoting yourself and your books? I find that having 99 cent sales is an effective tool, since we all love a deal. Also, emails targeted to those who want news about paranormal romance are helpful.
It seems as though social media is essential for any author or other businesses for that matter. How do you feel about social media? Yes, social media is essential and also fun, but can take up a lot of time if we aren’t careful (cough *Pinterest* cough)! But I LOVE being able to connect with readers. You know, hearing about everyone’s favorite books, book boyfriends, movies, junk food, the weather…anything goes!

Where are your books available for purchase? Wicked Wind will soon be an Amazon exclusive title. Wicked Waves and Wicked Flames are available on Amazon, B&N.com, Smashwords, Kobo, and iTunes
Is there anything you would like to add or say to your fans? Just that you guys are the best, and I appreciate whenever you take time to leave me a comment or a review! Without you, this series wouldn’t have continued past the first book, so XOXO!
Sharon, thank you so much for stopping by VRB and talking to us. I wish you the best of luck with the release of Wicked Flames, and I hope you will visit with us again. It’s been fun, thank you for having me!
Sharon Kay writes award-winning fiction and can never get enough reading time. She loves
paranormal romance, with romantic suspense following close on its heels. She loves winter and
black coffee, and is endlessly inspired to write kick-ass heroines and the men strong enough to
capture their hearts.
Sharon lives in the Chicago area with her husband and son, and didn’t expect to write one book,
let alone a series. But WICKED WIND and the Solsti series formed in her head one weekend
and refused to stay quiet until she put pen to paper. Her characters tend to keep her up at night,
as they banter, fall in love, and slay endless varieties of power-hungry demons.

Best-selling ROMANCE with Paranormal, Sci-fi, and Fantasy Flair.
If you’re looking for something new and different in PNR, you’ve come to the right place.
I write unapologetic romances with uniquely fresh perspectives on paranormal creatures, characters, and themes. Add a dash of scifi and a flourish of fantasy to enough humor to make you laugh out loud and enough steam to make you squirm in your chair. My heroines are independent femmes with flaws and minds of their own whether they are aliens, witches, demonologists, psychics, or past life therapists. My heroes are hot and hunky, but they also have brains, character, and good manners – usually – whether they be elves, demons, berserkers, werewolves, or vampires.
I have authored and illustrated Seasons of the Witch calendars and planners for fifteen years and teach magickal arts for Seasons in Avalon. I live in The Woodlands, Texas which is why I sometimes joke about being the witch in the woods.
TIME FOR CONFESSION!!!
Being an author’s assistant is a job like no other: Exciting, fulfilling, and, at times, crazy! We work for an Indie author, Victoria Danann, which adds another level of challenge to the mix. Without a big publisher behind us, we work on her behalf to get the word out about her amazing books.
Here’s our first confession: Neither of us has worked as an author’s assistant before! We were both fans first, as well as being members of her street team. She mentioned one day that she was looking for a new assistant, and both of us replied. Being a smart woman, Victoria realized how amazing we both are. So, instead of choosing one, she hired us both! Now the three of us are blazing our own trail in the wild world of Indie publishing.
Our most important functions are managing Victoria’s social media and the street team, which is a group of some of the most devoted Victoria fans around. The street team is one of our most important keys to getting the word out about the Black Swan serial saga. We also work with Bloggers and Facebookers to feature or promote Victoria’s books, keep track of her calendar, and organize events such as giveaways. There are a lot of moving parts that require a tremendous amount of organization and detail supervision. Through a semi-complicated structure of file sharing and online chat, the three of us are able to work as a team so that each of us always knows what the other is doing.
Once people find out about and read Victoria’s first book, My Familiar Stranger, which is free everywhere, they usually join the rest of us in being fans of her work. We really love that her books are a mix of paranormal romance and fantasy, genres that we both really enjoy reading. It’s so fun working for someone you admire – Any task that helps her out is something we’re glad to do.
We’re commonly asked the following questions:
How’d you get the job?
Sarah: I had been on her Street Team for about a month when the opportunity came up that she needed an assistant. I sent her an email about all the things I had done in the past, reasons why I would be a great assistant. I was SO nervous waiting for the response! But, as you can see, I am here!
Judy: One day, on the street team page, Victoria mentioned that she needed an assistant. I contacted her to offer to help her out in the meantime, but it turns out I was in the right place at the right time, and started working for her! The learning curve has been pretty steep – there is so much about the author world that is so very different from the experience of a reader. I love this job! I get to utilize every skill I’ve learned over the years and apply them in unique and creative ways.
Sarah: You’re right, it is crazy different as far as how it measures up to any other job I have, but I would never trade it!
Judy: I’m constantly amazed that I get to do what I do. I learn so much every day. I didn’t realize how bored I was before. Seriously.
How did you know that the street team idea would even work?
Judy: The idea of a street team isn’t really new. It started in the music industry with a literal street team handing out fliers about a new music group. The concept has evolved now into street teams for all kinds of things. Feedback I get from members of Victoria’s street team is that this is one of the most active groups for an author. Our team has regular blogs that they work with to help spread the word. Having a hangout on Facebook with a private page for our group has been really great for building our team identity.
Sarah: Victoria had the Street Team before I became her assistant. I think it’s a great idea for many different reasons. Her biggest fans get time to chat with her whenever they like, they know her better than her other readers do. They also get the opportunity to get her new books about 2 weeks before everyone else. This helps both them and Victoria as she gets feedback before the release date. It is also a great advertising tool as we have wonderful Street Team members that will help get the word out about anything!
What is the most rewarding aspect of being an author’s assistant?
Sarah: This one is hard to explain. Being Victoria’s assistant is a reward in itself. I get to talk to her daily, manage a fantastic Street Team, and meet some really incredible people. All the while knowing that I am helping a writing genius get the time to do what she does best!
Judy: The most rewarding thing about this job is that I get to help an author I truly admire. It just feels so good knowing that my work in the background enables her to have time to write her amazing books.
Sarah; She’s right; I know Victoria is writing fantastic things and that makes me extremely happy!
Judy: I love it every time Sarah says, “She’s right,” when she’s talking about me! It happens a lot.
How many hours a week/day do you spend on this job?
Sarah: A lot. But in no way can I complain. Most of the Street Team says they see me online, all the time, no matter what time it is. Well, I LOVE what I do. And a lot of my part of the job includes Facebook, so I’m on there for my stuff and book stuff all the time. Plus keeping track of what 50 people do takes up some time!!
Judy: It’s really impossible to calculate. I know I work the equivalent of office hours daily, and then check in again at night. I try to avoid working on the weekends, but when stuff is happening, I’m on whenever I need to be. This job for me is a blend of fan/ employee – it’s definitely more a labor of love….but it is nice to get paid!
Sarah: Wait… You get paid??
So, what’s the dirt? Any scoops you can share?
Judy: Wow! Way to put us on the spot. Part of being an assistant is protecting the person you work for. My boss probably won’t fire me for saying that she put a photo of herself on Facebook once – she was swimming – I noticed no clothing in the picture, and asked her about if – to which she replied, “haha”. Yep. That’s the kind of crazy I’m lucky enough to work with every day. I love her.
Sarah: She’s got a wicked crazy sense of humor….and she and I get one another’s jokes, while Judy is often left scratching her head!
Judy: Hey! I get some of the jokes….sometimes.
Blazing a new trail in the world of Indy book publishing is exciting and fun. There is some seriously hard work involved, but it’s hard to really take note of that when we’re having such a good time! Being coworkers that truly enjoy and admire, not only our boss, but one another, makes every workday fun and entertaining. We both like meeting new people, learning new things, and we’re pretty good at sharing the load. We don’t know how Victoria got along without us!

A bit about the Pyte/Sentinal Series Pytes live in a world where their immortality, strength, speed and
ability to withstand the sun should make them gods on earth. Instead
they are forced to live in fear. Their ability to create a stronger more
powerful army of vampires has Master Vampires all over the world waging
wars to find them and Sentinels determined to get them.
Even as they fight for their freedom they know that one day they’ll have to choose a side….
of years ago a war was started on earth between God and Lucifer after
Lucifer left the confines of Hell to steal much needed human souls.
of anger, God punished Lucifer, sealing him in Hell and away from his
children. God decreed that as long as there was even one human soul left
on earth, Lucifer could not leave Hell. Knowing that he couldn’t
outright destroy God’s precious children without feeling God’s wrath,
Lucifer did the only thing he was allowed, he released one Vladerc demon
He used God’s rules against him not caring that once
the demon was released he could not release another. It didn’t matter.
He’d chosen well. The Vladerc demon not only fed on humans stealing
their souls, but the demon could also turn humans into hybrid Vladercs
who would steal more human souls until only his demons inhabited the
earth freeing him. Free Will stopped God from interfering on Earth
leaving Lucifer’s demon to spread his disease.
Or so he thought….
the rules to his advantage God sent five of his elite Angel warriors to
earth every ten years. To keep them from becoming too powerful or
easily detected by Lucifer’s children he split their souls in half and
merged each half with a human soul. He named them Sentinels for they
protected his greatest treasure, his children. He blessed them with
longevity, strength, speed and the only thing he could think of to thank
them for their sacrifice as well as keep them loyal to him….
A soul mate.
A Neighbor From Hell Series

A Bit about The Neighbor From Hell Series
Every neighborhood, whether it’s located in the best part of town or
across the tracks has one very important thing in common: they all have
the one neighbor that you wish you could club upside the head, throw in
the back of your trunk, and dump a hundred miles into the woods all
while giggling hysterically and promising yourself that this time would
be different, this time he wouldn’t find his way back. You know who I’m
It’s the person that steals your newspaper, lets
his dog walk on your freshly mowed lawn, blasts their music at all hours
of the night, steals your parking spot, leaves their alarm clock
blasting twenty-four seven and just annoys the living hell out of you.
What if I told you that this person really wasn’t so bad once you got to
know him and that by the time I’m done spinning you a tale that not
only will you find all of his quirks endearing, but that you’ll fall
head over heels in love with him? What would you say then?
Don’t believe me? Well, I guess there’s only one way to find out. Check out my Neighbor From Hell series and see for yourself
A Bit about The EMS Series
Working in EMS can be one of the most exciting jobs of your life. It
can also be one of the most stressful experiences of your life. Long
hours, being held over at the last second, horrible pay, close calls,
and patience that drive you to drink, but what it really comes down to
is your partner. A good partner can make your day fly by while a bad
partner can make you contemplate manslaughter.
Come along for the ride with R.L. Mathewson’s EMS series and experience it for yourself.
A bit about the Hollywood Hearts Series
Being rich and famous is great. Everyone loves you and wants to be
you. Life should be perfect, and it is, except for a few minor issues
like not being able to make a run down to the corner store without being
the target of paparazzi, fans harass you wherever you go, you can’t go
anywhere without a bodyguard, you can’t figure out who your real friends
are or if you even have any and the fake smile you plaster on your face
every morning is starting to hurt.
No matter what you do, how
much money you have and how many fans scream your name you can’t help
but feel like something is missing. A Hollywood Hearts series just might
be the answer to all of your problems. If you don’t mind a few genuine
smiles, a few laughs, steamy love scenes and maybe a tear or two then
this series just might be what you’re looking for.
There was something seriously wrong with Marty. That was the only
explanation that she could come up with. Why else would she feel this
way for the biggest SOB in town? Granted, he was also the hottest man in
town, but he was also arrogant, callous, and determined to drive her
away even as he drove her crazy with his touch. She should just walk
away from him and probably would if it wasn’t for this connection that
she’d always had with him that kept making her want more with the one
man that couldn’t give her anything more than heartache.
should have left and never looked back when he’d decided to finally do
the right thing and push Marty out of his life, but instead he stuck
around to torture himself by staying close to the one woman that he
could never allow himself to have. She deserved better than him, better
than the tortured existence that he led and better than the horrifying
future that waited for him.

I am very proud to be a part of Lauren Grimley’s Romance For a Reason tour. I hope that you will follow along with the tour all month for chances to win prizes, learn ways you can help, and of course purchase Lauren’s book Unbridled. She is donating the proceeds from each book to two very important charities, V-Day and The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Below you will find a teaser from the book as well as information on ways you can help! I’d like to thank Lauren for bringing attention to both of these groups as I’ve been personally affected by both as have many other women!
Unbridled: A collection of short stories from the Alex Crocker series
By Lauren Grimley
“Think Law and Order SUV meets The Breakfast Club” was Ellie’s trite explanation of what Alex had been dragged into. Add a few fangs, Fifty Shades of Oversharing, and a dash of Dr. Phil, and she was in for quite a Thursday night.
Alex couldn’t deny she had become the pint-sized poster child for PTSD lately, but she didn’t exactly expect to find a support group for teachers turned vampire chew toys in Bristol, MA. Listening to the tales of the four other females gathered to help her heal, however, she accepts that perhaps both the worst and the best of life can blossom from the unexpected.
Unbridled is a novella-length collection of four connected stories focusing on the unlikely friendships and less likely lovers of the female characters from the Alex Crocker series.
“Grace and Dignity”
Even a female whose mating has been arranged most of her life still thinks about what she wants in a mate. Not one of the qualities Sarah had hoped for were easily evident in her betrothed, the future Regan of the Rectinatti coven. Perhaps, though, there were more layers to Darian than he liked to reveal, but how does a subject unmask a prince?
“Rules and Recollections”
Bristol, Massachusetts, 1902
You can’t fall in love with someone you barely recall, but that, Vivian supposed, was the point. After a terse meeting with the Knower, a mind reader, memory manipulator, and the coven’s most notorious lecher, Vivian isn’t herself. She can’t shake the feeling that the solution to her mood lurks just below the surface of her consciousness. Only plunging into darkness, though, will bring everything to light.
“Blood and Secrecy”
Bristol, Massachusetts, 2008
The shared need for blood brought them together, but individual desires for secrecy are keeping them apart. Each already left behind a life of privilege for reasons the other likely couldn’t understand. Now both Rocky and Ellie need to decide if they’re willing to open up about their pasts in order to ensure a future.
Series: Alex Crocker series, can definitely be enjoyed without reading the first two books in the series, but is written to fit after the events of book 2, Unveiled.
Genres: paranormal romance, vampire series, urban fantasy, short stories
Release date: October 1, 2013
Available formats: ebook & paperback (184 pages)
Website page: http://www.laurengrimley.com/Unbridled.html
Or for those who want just a bite, three of the individual stories are available as well:
“Grace and Dignity”
“Rules and Recollections”
“Blood and Secrecy”
For the other books and stories in the series see Lauren’s Amazon Author page: http://www.amazon.com/-/e/B007Y5ZZSG
Paperback (Amazon only, it’s not yet linked to the e-book): http://www.amazon.com/Unbridled-Collection-Short-Stories-Crocker/dp/0615861113
While I was writing these stories, it occurred to me that, although I was focusing more on the romance this time, I was once again creating some tenacious heroines who’d all faced varying degrees of adversity. I wondered vaguely if I could perhaps publish these tales myself in order to donate the proceeds to women’s charities who help such real-life women. Then, just as I was finishing a rough draft of the project, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer for a second time. And for the second time in my life I wanted to do something, anything, to help support her and other women facing the same terrifying challenge. My knees no longer allow me to do the kind of training needed to complete a second triathlon for my mom, as I had the first time around. Besides, in the years since high school I’d found another passion: writing.
Combining my love of story telling, strong heroines, and girl power, I came up with the idea for Romance for a Reason. It is one small step I can take to help end some rather formidable issues facing women: breast cancer and violence. I’m hoping others will take it with me this month, making October (National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and National Domestic Violence Awareness Month) a month of celebrating women’s strength and beauty.
How you can help:
Read some romance. Proceeds from Unbridled will be donated to the two charities listed here.
Donate. Make your own individual donation to these two charities or choose a local charity supporting these and other causes affecting women in your area. To learn more about each charity and my reasons for choosing them, visit the Romance for a Reason page. Or click through to donate directly.

Host. Gather the women (and men!) of your book club or just a group of friends for a Romance for Reason party. Party ideas? Check out my blog for ideas on how to plan your gathering. Then download the Romance Reading Questionnaire and/or the Body Lingo Bingo for some fun party activities!
Share. Tweet, status update, review, or just chat with friends about the books, the tour, and the charities (mine or yours)!
It’s not about the money we raise, the miles we run (or slowly plod), or even the strong females we read and write about. It’s about recognizing there’s something, anything, we can do, and doing it. For me it was writing and sharing some feminist romance with fangs. What will you do to change the colors of fall from red and orange to purple and pink?
About the author:
Lauren Grimley lives in central Massachusetts where she grew up, but her heart is on the beaches of Cape Cod where she spends as much of her time as possible. After graduating from Boston University she became a middle school English teacher. She now balances writing, reading, and correcting, all with a cat on her lap and a glass of red wine close by.
Unforeseen, the first novel in the Alex Crocker Seer series, was Lauren’s debut novel. She was thrilled this spring to continue the series with Unveiled and now Unbridled. To learn more about her or her writing or to connect with her online visit her website at www.laurengrimley.com

Dating a Jaguar Shifter
Wade Patterson’s Testimony
Transcribed by Terry Spear
Have you ever considered dating a jaguar shifter?
We’re meat lovers. As a jaguar, that’s ALL we eat. No lettuce salads. But because we are human also, we do eat our veggies.
But if you want to win over a jaguar shifter, make sure you order meat lover’s pizza. A steak or two is good. Love fish.
We love to swim, so if you have an idea for a fun romp to a watering hole—lake, pond, river, beach, shower, hot tub, waterfall, we’re game. Water is great for fishing, cooling off, and… heating up.
If you need some protection, you’ve got it. Old boyfriend pestering you? Won’t be a problem. Even humans can sense when a jaguar shifter’s being territorial and doesn’t want the old game to make trouble for his ex. They might not be able to smell our hot-wired emotions, but they can see the predatory gleam in our eyes, and the ready-to-pounce posture that says, “Back off, buster, or else.”
If you want some kitty cat loving—the BIG variety—we’ve got it.
We’re wild as in like to visit the rainforest for a run on the wild side. Well, most of us do. A few are citified jaguars. So if you want someone who’s on the tamer side, we have some of those also. But if you want to visit the jungle, choose a wild shifter. We know the ropes and can teach you all the tricks of surviving in the jungle. That includes knowing where all the best water romps are, too. All work and no play makes the jaguar shifter one dull cat.
Like to dance? I know a great jaguar shifter club for dancing.
Did I mention being a little territorial? Even the pure jaguars are like that. But they claim a couple of she-cats for mates and a territory that encompasses both of theirs. Our human side dictates we have more monogamous relations. Not that a few don’t act more like a cat on the prowl. But the good guys like to make it a happily ever after for those with cat scratch fever.
Ever love to climb a tree in your youth? We enjoy getting off the ground and perch high above, watching the world pass us by.
In the big cat world, the she-cat takes care of her cubs. But you better believe male jaguar shifters are just as protective of the she-cat as they are of their offspring. And yes, that means changing diapers. Not that I’m faced with that prospect yet, but in the future, I’m sure of it.
And that’s about all I can say for now on the dating aspects when getting interested in a jaguar shifter.
One lucky commenter will win a copy of A Highland Werewolf Wedding, US/Canada only, just answer a question:
Which water source would be your favorite place to meet up with a jaguar shifter, and what appeals so much about it?
JAGUAR FEVER BY TERRY SPEAR – IN STORES AUGUST 2013
She’s being pursued by everyone, in more ways than one.
Even in an exotic world of humans, jaguars, and tantalizing creatures who shift between the two, Maya Anderson stands out from the crowd. Interest from human suitors is bad enough, but when male shifters give chase, the real trouble starts.
Who’s the hunter and who’s the prey?
Investigating the black marketing trade of exotic animals keeps Wade Patterson more than busy. When he and Maya both get entangled in a steamy jungle mission, it becomes impossible to tell who is being hunted or who the hunters are. Wade is desperate to survive this deadly game of cat and mouse. But it’s Maya’s piercing eyes that keep him awake at night.

Publisher: Ellora’s Cave
Themes: Historical: Regency, Vampire
Description:Tired of the thin-blooded aristocrats in 1815 London, Alexius yearns
for better sport. He is drawn to a dark-haired seductress who shows no
fear and refuses to obey his commands. Entranced by such novelty, he
denies his bloodlust and decides to keep her to warm his bed.
Immortal vampire hunter Morana has never mistaken her prey before,
but the dark stranger mesmerizes her, enticing her to forget
everything but the dangerous pleasure she finds in his arms.
Neither one can deny the pull of the other, but there is something
beyond the lust—a recognition neither can put a name to. The past
and present collide and unless they discover the truth behind the
lies, Death will triumph once more.
I am pleased to present Christina Phillips to VampireRomanceBooks.com. She is joining us today to talk about her newest book Bloodlust Denied among other things.
Hello Christina! Thank you for taking the time to talk with us today!
Hi Rhonda and Teresa! Thank you so much for having me on Vampire Romance Books today!
Will you tell the readers a little about yourself?
I’m an ex-pat Brit, now living in sunny Western Australia just a couple of minutes stroll from the beach. I have one husband and three children, and three cats who feel it’s their duty to sit as close to the laptop as possible whenever I’m writing. They also enjoy running off with my sticky notes and pens.
I read in your bio that you began writing stories about spaceships and time travel at the age of eight, is that a genre you still like to read?
Yes I do! It’s probably just one of the many reasons why I’m so obsessed with Battlestar Galactica (not a book I know, but I’m such a fangirl J ) Although the stories I wrote as a teenager were full of angst and thwarted love, they always contained some weird element of the paranormal. Now days I love to read PNR and fantasy romance because I must have my HEA!
When did you first get bit by the romance bug? Do you remember the first romance book you read?
I was about 10 when a friend brought in some Barbara Cartland books to school. I was hooked from the first moment! Beautiful heroines and strong heroes and a chaste kiss or two and I was in heaven. Then when I was 11 I read Wuthering Heights and it blew my mind. It was only years later it finally hit me the reason why that book left such an impression. It had paranormal elements! But not the HEA I craved, that’s for sure!
Can you tell the readers a little bit about Bloodlust denied?
I’d love to! The idea for Bloodlust Denied first came to me about four years ago when I read a submissions call from Ellora’s Cave for stories connected to music. I instantly had this vision of a dark haired seductress dancing to the haunting strains of a single violin in a London back alley. I’d wanted to write a Regency romance for ages, and the two ideas melded when the hero entered the scene. However, he was no ordinary duke. He turned out to be a two thousand year old vampire who had long ago forsaken his honor and conscience. As it turned out I never did submit to EC four years ago as I missed the deadline due to other commitments, but the story always remained in the back of my mind. Eventually I revisited it last year, gave it a good edit and it was picked up by Ellora’s Cave J
I read Bloodlust Denied, and let me put it out there for everyone, that is one STEAMY read! How do family and friends respond to the erotic side of your books?
Very well, actually. When I first started writing (non-erotic romance) an acquaintance did make a dig about me writing “bodice rippers”. But on the whole everyone has been very accepting. I was especially thrilled when my mother-in-law wrote to tell me how much she enjoyed my Roman/Druid romances!
My two daughters have been very supportive of my writing, but as far as I know they haven’t read any of my books. Because I’m their mother and I guess I shouldn’t know about sex and stuff like that J
My husband is also very supportive and has even read a couple of my books, but I’m sure he wonders where exactly I get my ideas from. Heh heh!
Bloodlust Denied takes place in 1815. If you brought Alexius out to play, what do you think he would think about the world today? How would he fit in?
Alexius has been a vampire for two thousand years and during that time has seen huge changes in the world around him. Throughout it all he’s not only survived but flourished and I know he’d soon adapt to the modern world. In fact I think he’d relish all our mod cons! I can see him being a very successful tycoon!
Tell us about some of your other works. Do you have a favorite?
I do have a very soft spot for my Roman/Druid romances. These books are set during the first century when the Romans invaded Britain, but each book is a stand alone. I love exploring the forbidden love between my sexy warriors and their magical Druid heroines, as well as the powerful gods and goddesses who have no intention of fading quietly into the mists of time. The third book set in this world, Betrayed, was recently released by Ellora’s Cave and the fourth one, Tainted, should be out before the end of the year.
What is the writing process like for you? Do you have a set time to write or do you get an idea and run to the nearest computer?
I write every day on my books, either new work, revisions, editing or promotional stuff. When a new idea comes to me I’ll scribble down a few notes so I don’t forget, but I don’t start a new story until my current one is done.
If you could collaborate with any author who would it be?
Before I was published, quite early on in my writing journey, I did collaborate on a couple of books with another author. It was enjoyable and I learned a lot but I’m not sure I’d ever want to go through the process again.
What are you currently working on?
At the moment I’m working on the second book in my Highland Warrior Chronicles. These books have been acquired by Ellora’s Cave and feature gorgeous Scot warriors and their brave Pictish princesses. The books are set in the ninth century during the turbulent time when both Scot and Viking coveted Pictland so there’s plenty of juicy conflict! I have the unedited blurb of Her Savage Scot up on my website if you want a sneak peek
Where can fans go to see what you are up to?

Christina, thank you once again for stopping by VRB and letting us grill you! Is there anything you would like to add or say to the readers out there?

Tristan’s Lyceum Wolves
Immortals of New Orleans, Book 3

Word Count: 94,000 words
An erotic paranormal romance…
Charismatic and powerful Lyceum Wolves’ Alpha, Tristan Livingston, is out for revenge after a devastating attack on his pack. Determined to mete out justice, he rescues a beautiful witness who may be the key to helping him find the perpetrators.
Dr. Kalli Williams, dedicated veterinarian, is hiding a secret that endangers not only her own life but the lives of wolves across the country. As Kalli places herself in the hands of the dominant wolf, she soon finds she wants nothing more than to submit.
Tristan, committed to ruling his pack as a lone wolf, is inexplicably drawn to the mysterious and enticing woman, who seems more than human, but not quite supernatural. As he discovers her secret, he teaches her the meaning of trust, helping her learn how to be true to her nature. After living a lifetime alone, will he succumb to the visceral need to claim her, acknowledging the soul binding connection between an Alpha and his mate? Stunned by her beauty, he could barely breathe. Goddess, the woman was spectacular. The fiery red gown clung to her in all the right places, and he noticed a small smile grow on her angelic face, presumably pleased that she had castigated Alexandra. He needed to get to her, hold her. As he rushed across the room, Mira stopped him with a hand to his arm. She gestured toward an elusive client standing to her left.
Logan laughed, seeing Kalli triumph over the demon spawn who ran the vampires. “Hey girl, I hate to point it out, but man you laid her out…and that growl. What was that?”
“Dance with me, Logan,” Kalli declared, needing to move.
“Your wish is my command.”
They crossed the floor, and Logan swept her into his arms. As amazing as Logan looked, she yearned for Tristan. She could feel he was close. As the music grew louder in her ears, she swayed along to the classical beats, hyper-aware of his presence. Leaning her head on Logan’s shoulder, she finally spied Tristan near the buffet, surrounded by Mira and a short bald man.
His eyes caught hers, and her heart started to race. She wasn’t sure whether it was his pensive expression or aggressive stance, but she could clearly sense he was agitated. Logan spun her, and she lost his eyes only momentarily, then caught them once again. His predatory gaze electrified the room, sending goose bumps over her skin. As he stalked toward them, her breathing hitched. Like a rabbit alert to the wolf, she froze save for the mindless dance steps she made while blindly following Logan. As Tristan came upon them, she forced herself to face him directly. Larger than life, Tristan was sophistication etched in dripping sexuality. His dominance was apparent to every man, woman and supernatural in the room; there’d be no denying him.
Even Logan stopped dancing to respect his Alpha. Lowering his eyes in submission, he bowed slightly. “Thank you for the dance,” he whispered, releasing her.
Before she had a chance to say a word, Tristan wrapped a hand around her waist, pulling her tightly to him so they pressed together. She could feel his barely restrained erection nudging her belly. Suppressing a moan, she felt herself grow wet. She clenched her thighs hoping to hide her arousal; every supernatural within fifty feet would know of her excitement.
“Don’t,” Tristan ordered.
“Don’t what?” she managed to ask.
“Don’t try to hide it. Your delicious scent.”
“But they’ll know I …” Kalli’s words trailed off as she lost her train of thought. God, he felt incredible.
“I want them to know. I want them all to know you’re mine.”
“But I thought…I mean you came with her.” Her eyes darted to Mira.
“Business only, nothing more. Still, I’m very sorry I didn’t bring you with me. Clearly I was an idiot to leave you alone with my beta. Every man in this room is looking at you, Kalli.”
“No,” she denied, shaking her head.
“Yes. And they should. Because you’re magnificent. Everything about you from that alluring dress I bought you to your sexy growl. My Goddess, do you know what you do to me? Feel it,” he whispered, grinding his groin against her.
“Tristan,” she breathed. She was on the verge of orgasm from just dancing with the man. She couldn’t imagine what would happen if they made love.
“Did you enjoy dancing with Logan?
“Yes, Logan. Did you enjoy having your sweet body pressed to his?”
“Oh God, Tristan.”
“It’s all right, Kalli. Did you find it arousing? Tell me the truth.”
“Another test?” she sighed.
“Okay yes, but he’s not…he’s not you. No one I’ve ever met in my life is like you,” she admitted.
“Ah, see how easy it is to tell the truth, ma chérie? Perhaps you’d like to explore two men at once?” he teased with a sexy smile as if he’d thoroughly enjoy it.
She blushed, not denying it.
“Someday we’ll explore that little kink of yours, but tonight you are mine. In fact, I think you’ll be mine for quite a long time.”
“Confident, huh, wolf?”
“Would you ever expect anything less?”
He spun her around, continuing to brush against her. Tightening the grip around her waist, he ran his palm up her arm to her neck, until he reached her face. Caressing her cheek, he ran his thumb across her lower lip. “I want you so much, Kalli. I’m so sorry for everything. I shouldn’t have sent you to Logan’s. I was angry, but damn, I need you.”
She groaned and threw her head back, publicly baring her neck to him. Submission, truth, she’d give it to him all right. But what he needed to learn was that he was hers as well, and after tonight she had no intention of letting him go.
Please welcome James Lyon, author of Kiss of the Butterfly to VampireRomanceBooks.com!
James is a Doctor of Modern Balkan History and has traveled and lived all over the world! James will be with us for the next couple days featuring his wonderful book Kiss of the Butterfly. Be sure to leave a comment or questions for James as he will be giving away two copies of his book!
Welcome, James, and thank you so much for being a guest with us.
1. Please tell us a little more about your travels, and how you wound up in Balkan studies. What
drew you to study Balkan history in the first place?
Even though everybody asks me that question, I’m still not quite certain how to explain it
convincingly. At time even I myself wonder, at which point I scratch my head and feel like
Bugs Bunny when he exclaims “I knew I should’a taken that left turn at Albuquerque”. http://
But the truth of the matter is that in 1980-81 I spent two years living in Yugoslavia while serving
a mission for the Mormon Church. At first I was shocked by the cultural differences, especially
the large quantities of raw onions that seemed to be served with every meal.
Balkan Fast Food
But I quickly discovered that the people were wonderful, the food was fantastic, and there was
sooooo much history, from Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Turkey, Venice, Byzantium, Ancient Rome
and Greece, and even further back. I guess I just kind of fell in love with the people and the
country and have never looked back. The people here have such an amazing passion for life. And
I’ve grown fond of onions. And Garlic. J
2. How did you make the transition from Historian to Author? Why did you choose Vampires?
I am still active as an historian…at present I am finishing a chapter for an edited scholarly
volume (BIG YAWN) on artillery during the First World War, and I’m writing the chapter on
Serbia. As an historian and political analyst, I write for a living, and have written books, articles,
and policy papers. “Kiss of the Butterfly” is my first foray into fiction.
The Author Explaining His Scholarly Work to an Interested Listener
Vampires? That’s the easy part. I didn’t choose them: they chose me. Most people aren’t aware
that the word “vampire” originated in Serbia, not Romania. We can track the use of the word to
1725 and a specific place (Kisiljevo) and an incident where villagers dug up a suspected vampire
and drove a stake through his heart. So, as a Balkan historian, vampires are everywhere. The
Balkans had their own version of the Salem Witch Trials in the 1730s, but they were about
vampires, not witches. The Austrian Army sent out a military surgeon to conduct autopsies on
suspected vampires in the 1730s. And vampire-related folklore and documents go back to the
1300s, so vampires are hard to ignore around here.
A Gravestone in Kisiljevo
But the reason I chose vampires is because the Balkan folklore vampire – which is very different
from modern pop-culture vampires – makes for a great metaphor to discuss real life problems,
while at the same time telling a ripping good tale.
3. Who are your favorite authors to read?
I like the British authors the best, because they are excellent story-tellers and develop their
characters. Many of the greatest wrote for both adults and children, and their books have stood
the test of time: C. S. Lewis (Narnia), Lewis Carol (Alice in Wonderland), Rudyard Kipling (Jungle
Book), J.K. Rowling (Harry Potter), J.M. Barrie (Peter Pan), J.R.R. Tolkien (Hobbit), and Kenneth
Grahame (Wind in the Willows), to name but a few. I also love some of the great American
humorists/satirists, such as Mark Twain, Carl Hiaasen, and Dave Berry.
4. If you could write in collaboration with any author, any genre, who would you choose and what
would you write about?
I would write a satirical book about vampire penguins in collaboration with Dave Berry and
Carl Hiaasen. The BBC recently ran a story about vampire bats attacking penguin chicks. http://
www.bbc.co.uk/nature/21534299 Since Dracula and other pop-culture vampires wear tuxedos,
penguins are already halfway there. J
5. In Kiss of the Butterfly, who is your favorite character? Who was the most fun to write?
Everybody says that they liked the enigmatic Marko Slatina, but I liked the old bookstore owner
(Mr. Niedermeier). The paramilitary vampire thug Lynx was also a challenging character to write.
But Slatina is by far the most enigmatic, which makes him difficult both to write and decipher,
especially since he drops clues left and right that are not immediately evident as clues. Steven,
on the other hand, is intended to be a bit of an Everyman character, that is, a sounding board
for other people’s emotions and behaviors, which is why he reacts less and absorbs more.
Although this sometimes frustrates readers, it also enhances their emotional engagement with
the book, as they start getting angry with Steven for not acting the way they would like him
to act in certain situations. It is precisely his humanity and uncertainty that makes “Kiss of the
Butterfly” so real.
6. I’m very intrigued by the Balkan legends of vampires; can you speak more about this? How
much of your story includes traditional legends? Did you embellish on any for your story?
In my spare time I actually go vampire hunting. Here are a couple of blog links of some of my
more recent exploits.
A Gravestone That Plays a Cameo Role in “Kiss of the Butterfly”
I have read extensively about vampires in Balkan folklore, and I can assure the readers that all
the vampires in “Kiss of the Butterfly” are based entirely on authentic traditional descriptions
of “real” vampires as they appear in Balkan folklore. I have been pleasantly surprised by the
positive reaction the book has gotten from leading vampire specialists at universities, including
Professor Elizabeth Miller, the world’s leading Dracula expert. http://www.ucs.mun.ca/~emiller/
ABC News even quoted me and mentioned “Kiss of the Butterfly” in a story on vampires, which
really excited me. http://abcnews.go.com/International/vampire-threat-terrorizes-serbian-
village/story?id=17831327 So not only is “Kiss” a ripping good tale, it’s also historically accurate.
Even now I am planning a new vampire-hunting adventure for next month, which I will blog
about when it is finished. To ensure my survival, I shall hang garlands of garlic around my neck. If
it is successful, I shall start a new cosmetics and fashion line called “GARLIQUE”. J
7. It is refreshing to read a dark vampire story, where vampires are not sexualized, but are brutal
beasts that we loathe to find in dark places. How do you feel about the typical vampire stories
of the popular choices? Do you like to read the sexy vampire books?
Everyone has their own taste in books, so I don’t wish to criticize anyone’s favorites. But in my
humble opinion, a vampire book — by its very nature — should not be overtly sexy. Rather, it
should be cloaked in multiple layers of sensuous meaning and draped in diaphanous metaphors
that stimulate the imagination, arouse the senses, and spark the synapses to create a uniquely
individual experience for each reader, depending on their tastes and life experiences. Overtly
sexy attempts at vampires seem to lack the subtlety that makes the genre so tasty.
After all, Bram Stoker’s Dracula didn’t immediately rip off his shirt or any female bodices and
start ravishing women. Rather, he behaved as a perfect gentleman, was friendly and hospitable,
maintained an appropriate social distance, and said “Welcome to my house! Enter freely and
of your own free will!” That one sentence alone contains so many different layers of potential
meaning that it stirs the imagination, sends chills down the spine, inflames the loins, and leaves
the reader gasping for more. And Stoker did all of that without a single sign of lust, teenage
emotions, fiery passion, or overt sexuality.
8. As I was reading Kiss, I was imagining a movie-like scene in my head. I could see the dark
shadows, smell the stench, feel the irritation of dust (it was great!) How do you envision your
settings and scenes when you write?
My wife has often made similar comments about smelling the stench and sensing the irritation
of dust, at which point I know I need to take a shower. J But seriously, they always say that you
should write what you know. Everything I described in “Kiss of the Butterfly” was written on the
basis of personal experiences. The “Kiss of the Butterfly” Pinterest page http://pinterest.com/
kissofthebutter/ has a number of photos from the Petrovaradin tunnels, as well as assorted
photos from some of the places in the book, including Hvar, Belgrade, Budapest, the Drina River
Valley, etc. I hope to add more to Pinterest, but it keeps giving me problems.
Entrance to the Petrovaradin Tunnels
There are also photos on the facebook page, including one album of the Petrovaradin
fortress tunnels. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?
9. What are you working on now?
I have written the first chapter of the next volume in the saga, and have outlined the rest of
the book. It will follow the same format as “Kiss”, with interludes and flashbacks. It takes a
tremendous amount of research. I am also translating a scholarly work from Serbian into English
about vampires in Balkan folklore. J
10. I know that you have a second novel in the works to follow up Kiss; can you share some of it
with us, or discuss some of the general plot lines? (I want to know what happens when they all
go sailing away!)
The next volume will take place from spring of 1992 until either the end of that year or early
1993. It will consist of a prelude that continues the subplot of Vlad the Impaler (already written),
and will take place primarily in Bosnia, although there will be scenes in major international
capitals, including New York, Washington, Budapest, London, Vienna, Berlin, etc. There will also
be a surprise element from…SPOILER ALERT… Pennsylvania. The clue for that was given in one
of the interludes Ooooops… I’ve already given away too much.
In the tunnels of Petrovaradin
11. Is there anything you would like to share particularly with your readers here?
I expect a print version to be available in April on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other outlets.
Because I am a bit old-fashioned, each chapter will have an illustration, and there will be a map
to help readers navigate the unfamiliar geography. I have also included an original map of the
Petrovaradin fortress underground tunnels that was created by the Austro-Hungarian fortress
12. Do you have a dog?
A dog? Funny you should ask. I just happen to have a wonderful little puppy named Leon, who is
a Bichon Havanese. I am training him to sniff out vampires. Although he looks like a four-legged
dust mop, he is cute, cuddly, adorable, and loves to play. My wife assures me that he actually
has eyes under all that hair. And he still isn’t house-trained. So please buy my book so that I can
afford dog-food and diapers for Leon. J

Vehicle City Vampires Book One
By Roxanne Rhoads
Publisher: Bewitching Books
Genre: Paranormal Romance / Urban Fantasy
Word Count: 83,000
Anwyn Rose is descended from a long line of powerful witches yet she can barely cast spells young witchlings have mastered. She has one functioning witch gift, the power of knowing, which she puts to good use as a Detective on Flint’s Preternatural Investigation Team.
It’s a new era in Vehicle City, supernaturals are running the town.
The P.I.T has their hands full with paranormal crimes. Top priority is a serial killer, who appears to be a vampire, draining young women in the city.

Vampires: Dead, Undead, or Something Else
Guest Blog by Roxanne Rhoads
In most myths, legends and even in plenty of popular fiction vampires are described as either dead or undead, sometimes referred to as walking corpses.
No heartbeat, no need to breathe, no need to eat food or drink anything other than blood.
Honestly all that doesn’t make a whole hell of a lot of sense to me.
For me vampires are different and extraordinary creatures- and not dead at all. Just different.
I can understand them being described as dead in the early incarnations. Because before the Gothic literature of the 1800s romanticized vampires early myths and legends portrayed them as monsters- grotesque walking corpses. More like today’s zombies than the sexy, romantic and sometimes sparkling vampires that we often envision them to be.
I see being changed into as vampire as a transformation, not death- at least not completely. It is death and rebirth. A catalyst that transforms a person from human to Other. Changing from human to vampire is the death of the normal human life but not a true death.
I simply can’t wrap my head around the concept of a vampire being dead because of several things.
One they need to feed to “survive”. If you need to survive then obviously you’re not really dead, are you?
Another thing- rapid healing abilities. If you can heal, how can you be dead? Dead things don’t heal.
Other things I don’t agree with are the cold skin and lack of heartbeat and breathing. I think vampires are evolved and don’t need to breath as often as humans and their hearts don’t beat like ours- and the slowness of their heartbeat and breaths has something to do with the whole immortality thing.
And the cold skin… when they get cold that just means they need to feed, if they are fully fed their skin is just as warm as ours.
That brings me to the need for blood. As I mentioned I see vampirism as a transformation, a disease or mutation that changes the human body into something else, something more. It changes the metabolism and the higher functions of the body. To keep these processes going the body burns up its blood supply and constantly needs to be replenished.
The other powers of vampires- the glamour and mind control and all that, even the teleportation and shape shifting that some can do…well that goes into the magic slot.
I think vampirism is one part disease two parts magic.
In many of my stories the vampires defy the normal vampire conventions. They eat, they walk in daylight, they have heartbeats, and they breathe (usually). I try not to describe them as dead or undead and I don’t often stick them in coffins or in the ground.
In my newest book, Hex and the Single Witch, the vampires are all a little different from each other. Some have issues with sunlight, some do not, some have silver sensitivities some do not.
This is because there are many species of Others (fae, demon, shifter, witch, etc) than have interbred with humans over the centuries. When a human is turned into a vampire the dormant powers inside them become active. Most humans will never know they have “Other” blood inside them until the catalyst of becoming a vampire brings that dormant power to the surface. In addition vampires also gain some of their abilities and powers from the vampire that made them, their sire. The result is a species of vampires that have a wide variety of powers and abilities. Which is why they are so hard to track, kill or fight- you never know what you’re going up against when you deal with a vamp.
A 100% human with no “Other” blood inside will not survive the change into a vampire.
In the Vehicle City Vampire series I wanted to take all the myths, legends and variances of vampire abilities, mix them all up and create an explanation as to why vampires are so different. I hope that readers will enjoy my take on vampirism.
