Excerpt

The air was thicker than he remembered. Like soup in his lungs. Moist. Hot. Stifling. Kyter tipped his head back and inhaled, dragging it over his teeth. It carried a thousand scents unique to the rainforest, smells he hadn’t experienced in centuries.

A blend of sounds teased his ears, a cacophony of insects chirruping, birds singing and primates calling. His jaguar side shifted beneath his skin, a product of his restlessness. He wanted to let the change come over him and take to the trees, prowling along the branches to stalk the monkeys and the parrots. A band of bright blue and yellow macaws broke cover, a stunning flash of colour against the green canopy as they flew to another tree.

Kyter drew in another deep breath, holding this one in his lungs, and calmed himself, shaking off his nerves and trying to see the beauty of this place he had once called home.

The trees loomed above him. The monkey chatter mocked him. Everything closed in and his throat closed with it. A deep need to turn back and escape this place and what awaited him at the end of his journey filled him. He exhaled hard and pushed onwards, taking another step towards his destination. Each step was more difficult than the last. Each stride brought him closer to a place he had vowed he would never set foot in again.

But he had to be here.

He had set out from London a week ago, the same night he had received the news via a call from a satellite phone. That news had knocked his entire world off kilter and left him reeling in the middle of his nightclub, numbed from his skin down to his soul.

He had travelled non-stop since then. Through every plane journey that had carried him halfway across the world, all the boats that had taken him down the mighty Amazon river and its tributaries, and every step he had trod during his trek into the rainforest that had followed, what had brought him back here hadn’t sunk in.

He still felt numb.

He scrubbed a cloth around the back of his neck, wiping the sweat away, and shoved it into the back pocket of his black combat trousers as he took another hard step closer to his destination.

The forest closed in again, covering his tracks for him, even though he had made sure to conceal his path so humans couldn’t find the village nestled far from civilisation. Protected by nature.

Kyter trekked up a steep incline, the path becoming difficult. He struggled to lift his mud-caked boots over each root that threatened to trip him and clung to each tree he could reach, using them as support as he pushed onwards, battling through the fatigue.

The pack on his back was soaked from the sweat that rolled down his spine beneath his black tank. He had emptied his canteen a day back but hadn’t stopped for water. Just as he hadn’t stopped to rest nor to sleep since he had left the river behind two days ago. He couldn’t stop.

Not until he saw the truth for himself.

He wouldn’t believe a thing until then.

He wouldn’t feel a thing until then.

Not how his feet throbbed and burned from the non-stop trek across harsh terrain. Not the sting of a hundred insect bites. Not the ache in his bones.

Not the agony ripping his heart to pieces.

He reached a vertical wall of mud and bushes, and grabbed a thick root, using it to haul himself up the final few feet of the hill. He planted one knee up on the bank above him and grunted as he pulled his bodyweight up and set his other knee down on the ridge.

Kyter dragged himself onto his feet and clutched the tree to his left for support.

The scars on his back ached as he stared down the other side of the hill, through the trees and the scrub to the clearing in the valley.

The village of his pride.

He couldn’t call them family. They had never been family to him.

They had made sure of that, treating him as the outcast he was, ensuring he felt it every day of his long existence. He breathed hard, fighting the memories of this place as they surfaced, shoving them back down inside where they belonged. They had no place in his life now. He had banished them and his pain years ago, or at least he had tried. His fingers tensed against the tree trunk, his claws emerging and tearing through the thin bark to the wood beneath. It curled beneath his fingers, the fresh scent of it filling the air for a moment.

No. They weren’t his family.

If the news was true, then he had no family now.

Kyter pressed a hand to his soaked chest and dug his nails into his pectorals. He ground his teeth and chuffed, the short coughing noise escaping him before he could stop it.

No one would answer that call now.

The backs of his eyes burned and he growled, baring his emerging fangs as he stared down at the village, a flicker of grief piercing the numbness within him and setting fire to his heart.

The smaller wooden single-storey buildings stood on stilts on the earth, without glass in their windows and only shutters to close over them. The thatched roofs hung wide from the sides of each building, providing shelter for the windows and the long porch across the front. They looked so basic to him now, with none of the modern conveniences he enjoyed back in England at his nightclub in London, but one had been his home for most of his life, and he remembered that he had been happy at times.

His golden gaze sought the small residence on the outskirts of the village to his right, near trees that he had climbed as a cub and still bore his claw marks from when he had matured and had raked them to scent them. The house looked so small now. Desolate and lonely. Cold.

As cold as he felt inside.

Kyter straightened and took hold of the straps of his backpack. He sucked down another deep breath into too-tight lungs as his gaze swung back to the main area of the village, to the largest building that stood proudly in the centre of a wide open area. He avoided looking at the left side of the building, where a thick wooden column rose from the earth, and focused on his kin gathered in the square.

They filled the area, encircling a sombre scene that made his numb yet burning heart ache. He had no choice but to believe what he had been told now that it was right before him. Many of the buildings were damaged and, in the middle of the circle of his kin, bodies lay on individual stacks of logs and a cushion of palm leaves, all of them dressed in brightly coloured ceremonial tunics.

The flicker of fire in his chest exploded into an inferno that coursed through his veins and ignited his emotions, bringing them back full force, so powerful that they overwhelmed him. He wanted to throw his head back and roar out his fury and his pain as it ravaged him, but he refused to break with tradition even when he despised it.

Instead of unleashing his rage and grief, he clenched his trembling fists at his sides and vowed that he would hunt down whoever had done this. They would pay. By all that was dark and unholy within him—they would pay.

Kyter took one last deep breath and started down the hill, his step faltering as he approached the village. The hill was more a part of him than the village had ever been. He had spent most of his life up on it, looking down on the village, watching from a distance as ceremonies took place. Especially when they were mating ceremonies.

He never could bear being in the village for those. They only reminded him that he would never have such a thing.

There was no fated mate for him out there.

Now he had to take part in the worst ceremony of all.

He entered the boundaries of the village and kept his gaze fixed straight ahead, on the main building and the people gathered there. The acrid scent of smoke still filled the air, reminding him that only a week had passed since the attack on his kin. A week ago, she had been alive and now she was dead.

Murdered.

Had she been afraid? Had she tried to fight or escape? Had she begged for mercy? For her life?

What had he been doing?

Laughing over a glass of Hellfire in his bar with a pretty little mortal female who had been trying to get his attention all night.

She had been fighting for her life, and he had been laughing while it happened.

Tears burned his eyes and he scrubbed them away, refusing to let them fall. He should have been here. He never should have left.

He reached the edge of the gathered and all eyes turned to him, a hush falling over the village. He ignored them and averted his gaze to the earth, shutting out the pointed looks and the silent accusations that pressed down on his already trembling shoulders.

Kyter glanced at the lead elder of the pride, a tall slender male with short greying hair, and caught the coldness in his golden gaze. More ice than usual.

It had been a long time since Kyter had left this place behind, but he hadn’t forgotten the hostility of his pride. He could never forget. They had made sure of that. His back burned, each laceration feeling as if it had only just happened. The lash of the whip rang in his ears. His own pitiful cries followed it.

He closed his eyes against the memories and turned away from the older male.

The gathered parted for him, which was more than he had expected from them, and he swallowed hard, his throat tightening by degrees as he lifted his head and approached the dead.

Males. Females. Children. All laid out in rows. They numbered in their twenties. Almost half of the pride, and all of their strongest males. Their finest warriors.

Kyter looked at one of them and stopped dead as a vision of the male as a boy filled his mind. A violent collision of fear and hope flooded Kyter’s heart as he stood before the boy, eye-level with him, and the boy pointed at him. The big elder male beside him signalled to two other adult males. Kyter backed away, shaking his head. They clamped strong hands down on his arms and dragged him across the square in front of everyone.

To the column.

The sound of females sobbing yanked him back to the present and he breathed again, his hands shaking as his heart thundered against his ribs.

Kyter stared blankly at the women off to his right, the village of old disappearing to reveal them to him as they clutched each other, consoled by their shared grief and bonded by it.

He flexed his fingers, filled with a need to tell them that he was sorry for their loss, even when he knew that they wouldn’t listen to a word he had to say. They would only look upon him with scorn and disgust.

He hadn’t come for them anyway.

He had learned long ago not to give a damn about them, because they didn’t give a damn about him.

He had come here for one person.

Kyter’s eyes shifted to a small form on a pyre off to the left of the square, her body laid apart from the others and covered only in a piece of pale cloth. Ice and fire speared his chest, freezing and burning his heart at the same time. His throat clogged. Tears stung his eyes.

Not only born of grief.

They were born of fury too. Anger that even in death they were punishing her and holding her away from them, when she had loved them all so dearly. All because she had made a mistake. Duped by a male.

A growl curled up his throat, his anger growing as he realised that they blamed her for what had happened to the pride.

He knew they blamed him. They always blamed him.

The product of her mistake.

He slowly walked towards her, his eyes locked on her, his heart labouring in his chest. His legs shook with each step, his strength leaving him as he drew closer to her, and then gave out when he saw her bruised and lacerated face.

His beautiful mother.

He collapsed to his knees beside her and pulled her cold body into his arms, gently lifting the top half from the palm leaves. Her scent filled his senses and he gathered her against him, buried his face in her throat and cried out the grief ripping him apart inside. Tears spilled in an unstoppable flow as he breathed in her scent with each ragged inhale. He shook to his core and clutched her closer, unable to stop the words from spinning around his mind, damning him.

She had been fighting for her life.

He had been laughing.

Kyter rocked with her, with each hard sob that racked his body, and growled against her mottled skin.

“I should have made you come with me. I shouldn’t have left you behind.”

He chuffed, the low coughing sound that begged for reassurance and comfort reverberating in his throat, but she didn’t answer him.

She would never answer him again.

Kyter was shunned by his pride because of his blood. He left, but now tragedy brings him back to his old home. Kyter has a score to settle, but before that can happen he needs to possess a certain artefact. Iolanthe, is a treasure hunter. She finds things her clients want. She has found herself mixed up with a client who is deadly, and if she doesn’t deliver she could literally lose her head. Her search for this artefact has set her on a collision course with a Jaguar who will change her life forever, one way or the other.

Kyter is a jaguar shifter with a past full of pain. As a reader you can’t help but be drawn in by this strong man who has endured so much. Iolanthe is the picture of strength and independence. She has been on her own for some time living far from her own people. Kyter is struck by her beauty from the beginning, and although initially they don’t seem to be very compatible, you learn that first impressions can be deceiving.

The Eternal Mates series is one of my favorites from Heaton. She creates characters, like Kyter, that touch you deeply and you don’t want anything but to see them happy. For Heaton, words on paper are like paints on a canvas, she uses her words to paint a picture in colorful detail. She can take you from cities here on earth to lands in other realms. It is not hard to put yourself in a character’s place and see through their eyes. Hunted by a Jaguar is a wonderful paranormal love story. I do suggest reading the series in order to get a full understanding of the novel. I am excited to continue on with this series. I look forward to meeting new characters as well as seeing familiar ones have their story told.

Vail is known through the realms as the Mad Elf Prince. He ended up being captured by the demons of the Fifth Realm. Also being held prisoner is Rosalind, the light witch who saved Olivia, the fated mate of Vail’s brother Prince Loren. When Rosalind is sent to heal the dark prince she is unaware that it was one of her kind that drove him to madness. Vail feels for the fair witch but he is not sure he will be able to overcome his past and be the mate she needs.

Vail is a character that captures you from the start. I became aware of him in the second book and was so excited to read his story. This tortured warrior is strong, but darkness and violence are always just below the surface. Rosalind got my attention as well, but her true character shined in this book. She is a powerful witch who has suffered greatly, but she has not given herself to the darkness her sisters have.

It is no secret that I am a huge fan of Heaton’s work. She always seems to give us a character that tugs at our hearts and makes us want to reach out to save them, Vail is one of those characters. She did a beautiful job bringing us knowledge of exactly what this gorgeous and tormented elf has had to endure. Rosalind with her compassion and kindness for him was truly heart warming. Tempted by a Rogue Prince is my favorite in the series so far. I look forward to reading the future books in this series!

Tempted by a Rogue Prince (Eternal Mates Paranormal Romance Series Book 3)

When demons of the Fifth Realm capture him, he sees a chance to end his existence, but when he wakes in a cell to a beautiful female, he finds not death but his only shot at salvation—his true fated mate.

Captured by the enemy of the Third Realm when the war ended, Rosalind has spent months in the cells of the Fifth Realm with her magic bound, forced to heal the new king’s demon warriors, and haunted by the lives she has taken. When she’s brought to heal an unconscious man, she discovers her only hope of escape has come in the form of her worst nightmare and the first part of a prediction that might spell her doom—a devastatingly handsome and dangerous dark elf prince.

Nevar is a servant of Hell. Considering he was once an angel of the heavens, his new station is a bitter pill to swallow. Because of addiction and the need for revenge he has committed heinous acts. Now the darkness consumes him; he sees no good in himself and doesn’t feel he deserves any kind of redemption. The moment he meets Lysia in a demon bar she reaches something inside him. He soon realizes he wants to protect the beautiful woman who is seemingly made for him.

Nevar is a fascinating character. He is proof that there is no solid line between light and dark, and this line can blur. The torment in his soul and his self-loathing will bring you to your knees. He brings about a feeling of urgency, because it becomes imperative that this tortured soul find some kind of happiness. Lysia sees the light in him right away, and she admires the brooding warrior. The great thing about Lysia is the fact there is nothing ordinary about her.

Heaton brings her readers the passion and excitement we have come to expect from her work. One moment you are reading a scene filled with mind numbing passion, and then you are hurled into violent battles that leave you on the edge of your seat. You will definitely want to pick up the other books in the series before reading Her Avenging Angel. It is important to know the other characters in play as well as Nevar’s past.

I have been a fan of Felicity Heaton since I read her V.E.T series. I would recommend her to any paranormal romance fan as a must read author. I am always excited to see what she will put out next because she always delivers!

Eve, a former vampire hunter, cannot cope with her life as a vampire. She has refused to embrace any of the vampire ways, and that includes feeding. Her vampire father, Oneiric, has tried to help her but to no avail. He decides to send her to Oslo, to her sister Lilith and her mate Lincoln in the hopes they can help her come to terms with who she is. Tor is a hunter for the Vehemens bloodline, and it is his mission to escort Eve to her family. What he doesn’t know about is Eve’s need for revenge against the lover and partner who betrayed her, and is responsible for what she has become.

In the beginning of the story Eve did not seem like a strong character. She was overtaken by anger and fear that held her back. When she begins to form camaraderie with Tor she began to show some real moxie. I liked how she stood up for what was fair whether it was the accepted way or not. Tor is a cold and calculated hunter. He is Dangerous and devastating; the kind of leading male that makes you swoon and makes your knees go weak. Although he tries to keep his barriers up Eve has a way of tearing them down, giving readers a glimpse of the true man inside. He and Eve having been through similar circumstances they have an understanding and can truly relate to each other regardless of their stations in their bloodline.

Heaton thrilled me again with Hunger! I read the book cover to cover in one sitting. This story had a real intensity to it; a very emotionally charged read. Getting lost in the story I wanted to be the one in there getting swept off my feet! Heaton just continues to get better and better, just when you think she can’t take you any higher in the Vampires Realm she writes something to make you soar!

Hunger (Vampires Realm Romance Series Book 8)

But just as she is about to close in on the hunter-turned-vampire, an event is set in motion that threatens to see him slip beyond her grasp forever—the leader of her bloodline has sent an escort to bring her to the family’s mansion. To a nest of the very creatures she once hunted and loathes.

A vampire assassin hardened by centuries of service, Tor is a man of discipline and loyalty, never straying from his mission or the rules set out for him, and has purged all his weaknesses, including his emotions.
But the moment he meets the broken, fiery female he is to escort to Oslo, something dangerous awakens in him, something possessive and powerful, and when he is pulled into a deadly game of cat and mouse with the man who betrayed her, Tor discovers he will do anything to protect the woman slowly claiming his heart and give her the vengeance she desires—even break all the rules.

Can Eve embrace her new vampire nature in order to have her revenge and find a reason to live again in Tor? Can Tor and Eve stop the man who betrayed her and the deaths of thousands of innocents? Or will he succeed in creating a new army of hybrid vampires who will rise up against the purebloods?

Sophis’s life is being a guard for the Venia bloodline, and she can’t imagine being anything else. After a recent run in with a vampire hunter that nearly resulted in her death, Vivek, another guard and the one who trained her is trying harder than ever to have her removed from her position. Sophis doesn’t understand what has happened to Vivek over the last decade, they were friends and she felt they could be something more; now all she feels is his animosity. The two are sent on a mission together to scout for vampire hunters the night before the Creator Day masquerade ball. The seven vampire families will come together for two nights, and it is up to Vivek and Sophis to help with protecting the families. It is just unclear whether or not they can put personal feelings aside and work together.

As far as vampires are concerned neither Vivek nor Sophis are all that old. Having positions in the guard seems to be quite an accomplishment for both of them. They are similar in many ways, but the main thing is they are both very driven. There is also a lot of confusion on both sides where feelings for the other are concerned. Sophis is beautiful and brave, and Vivek is a dangerous and sexy alpha male. I was immediately taken with both characters.

Masquerade is one of my favorites of the series so far. I liked seeing some familiar characters as well as new ones. As usual Heaton takes you by the hand and pulls you into the world she created. Her world is a place of danger and excitement where passions and emotions run high. I for one cannot get enough! Vampire lovers sit up and take notice; you do not want to miss out on Felicity Heaton or her Vampires Realm!

Masquerade (Vampires Realm Romance Series Book 7)
Ten years have passed since Sophis and Vivek, two vampires of the Venia bloodline, came close to death at the hands of twin hunters Aleksis and Izabella Romanov. The events of that night turned Sophis and Vivek against each other, shattering their close friendship and driving them apart.
Now, on the eve of a centenary Creator Day masquerade and at a time when things between them are dangerously close to separating them forever, they uncover a small army of vampire hunters in Saint Petersburg, led by their nemeses, Aleksis and Izabella.
With the safety of the rulers of the seven pure vampire bloodlines in their hands and their chance for vengeance hanging in the balance, can Sophis and Vivek face their past and overcome their differences? Will they realise their true feelings for each other before it’s too late or will the hunters finally claim their lives as their deadly plot to destroy the bloodlines unfolds?

Nicolae is a lone wolf, after escaping the vampire clan who held him as a slave he made his way to Canada. Although there is another werewolf pack in the area, he feels more connected to the local pack of timber wolves. One night while running with the wolf pack he comes upon a group of hunters, and then stumbles upon the scent of blood. He finds what he thinks is a woman, but soon realizes she is vampire. His feelings are at war, he doesn’t know if he should let her perish or save one of the kind that enslaved him.

My heart broke for Nicolae, he lost so much went through atrocities that cannot be imagined, and now lives a life of solitude. Tatyana, the vampire that Nicolae saves isn’t without loss. She seeks to find the hunters who killed her sire. She has always felt weak, and like she didn’t belong. Even though she has these feelings she remains loyal to her family.

Hunter’s Moon is more of a romantic story than some of the others in the series. Heaton pairs two souls who seek solace from their loneliness. The love between vampires and werewolves is forbidden, but Nicolae and Tatyana look past this and listen to what is in their hearts. Heaton wrote what I think is a beautiful love story.

Hunter’s Moon has the ability to be a standalone book, but it fits nicely into the Vampires Realm series. I am a huge Felicity Heaton fan, and paranormal lovers won’t want to miss out on reading all of the Vampires Realm books.

That peace is threatened when unfamiliar hunters and the scent of blood lead him to a beautiful woman and a hard decision—face his past and help her or risk losing everyone he cares about again.
Bearing a heart filled with grief and with vengeance on her mind, Tatyana is intent on killing the hunters she’s tracking and returning to her vampire bloodline, but her plan didn’t include being shot with poisoned arrows or rescued by a glowering alpha werewolf who stirs forbidden hunger in her.
When the hunters make their move, will Nicolae be able to stop them before it’s too late? Will he be able to overcome the darkness in his heart and embrace his desire for a vampire? And can Tatyana face her fears and risk her life for the sake of forbidden love?

A commander of the Validus bloodline Winter stands sentinel to Lord Hyperion. Winter is loyal to his family, but has become attracted to a young woman named Nika. He has watched her grow from a girl to a woman and she has invaded his mind and heart. One night he hears screams, and recognizes Nika’s voice. He comes upon her being attacked by werewolves. He saves her life, but is not quick enough to save her from the bite that will make her his enemy. To love Nika is forbidden and would require him to choose between duty, family, and love.

The chemistry between Winter and Nika is lovely and very romantic. I admired Winter’s strength which was a compliment to Nika’s softness. She had noticed Winter as she was growing up and the attraction was not one sided. Although she only ever saw his eyes, she was able to read into them something that called to her heart. Lord Hyperion is also a fascinating character. He seems to have a bit of a mischievous nature. I look forward to seeing more of him in the future.

Winter’s Kiss is a story of forbidden love and passions, but I also found it very romantic. In my opinion, Heaton just continues to improve on the series as she goes along. Once I had this novel in my hands I could not put it down. As I have said before, getting lost in one of Heaton’s fantasy worlds is always a pleasure.

Seventh Circle is the fourth book in the Vampire Realm Series. Lincoln was entered into a pact with the devil by the Lord of the Vehemens. Only one can help him, Lilith, a vampire hunter. Lilith is an Elite Hunter with special abilities, and a strong hatred for vampires. She was angered by having to take Lincoln on as a client. She was confused when she started to have feelings for him. Now they work together to fulfill a destiny that will greatly affect them both.

Lilith is an amazing female. Her extraordinary gifts bring forth a darkness within that allows her to fight. She is at odds with her gift in the beginning, but it was exciting when she started to move on to embrace it. Lincoln is the Chosen Son of the Vehemens and violence rules him. The magnetism between Lincoln and Lilith weighs heavy even when Lilith is fighting the lure of the gorgeous vampire. I am partial to this interesting pair. I was also happy to see Prophecy, Valentine, and Venturi make an appearance. I am hoping future books will elaborate on the dynamics of their relationship.

I found Seventh Circle to be very exciting. Although I liked the Prophecy Trilogy very much I liked this one even better. I cannot say anything about Heaton I have not said before. She is an amazing storyteller. One aspect that I really enjoy about the series is that the vampires do not cater to the human race. They are driven to survive, and that means there is no guilt over the kill. They have the ability to mate and love, but their species is not sugar coated.

Vampire lovers will not want to miss out on this series! If you are a fan of werewolves or demons do not despair, there is a little something for you too. This is a paranormal series you can really dig your claws into!

The time has come. Prophecy is leading her allies to war for the battle that will either save their kind or destroy them all. She has had many trials, and she has made mistakes along the way; but now she must concentrate on moving forward to fulfill her destiny and hope that she and Valentine both make it through together.

Prophecy has transformed from a girl into a warrior, and she is nothing short of spectacular. Valentine’s love for her is true, and the magic that binds them is testament to that. However, she has feelings for Venturi. She has to come to terms that she loves him too, but Valentine is the one she has the strongest feelings for. What I admired about Venturi is that although he was hurting he remained loyal to Prophecy.

This was an exciting ending to the Prophecy Trilogy. It was action packed and emotional. There will be times you find yourself biting your nails trying to anticipate what is going to happen next! Once again, Heaton does a very impressive job. I have become a huge fan of Felicity Heaton’s writing. She is a wonderful storyteller, and she does it in a way that you become completely lost in the world she lays out for you.

I do have to stress that these are books with a continuing story and should be read from the beginning. I am looking forward to continuing on with the Vampire Realm series.
