AND NOW, THE INTERVIEW…
Congratulations on the paperback release of Love Bleeds! Besides that, what other exciting things are happening in your life right now?
Thank you!! I’m so thrilled with the popularity Love Bleeds has taken on and the fact that so many people are enjoying it…the positive responses and praise have been overwhelming and beyond flattering!! I couldn’t be happier.
Aside from that, my son is graduating from 8th grade in a few weeks and my 92 year old grandfather is coming up from Florida to be here for it. I haven’t see him for 2 years so this is gonna be a really special month for me. I’ve also been extremely busy with promotion for LB and have met so many wonderful people and made a lot of amazing new friends. Due to the article in my local newspaper, I’m actually starting to be recognized in public which is totally mind-blowing…lol. But it’s also awesome!! I feel like a local celebrity…and for that, there are no words to describe how it feels!
As a new name in the paranormal romance genre, do you mind if I ask you some personal questions? Don’t worry; nothing too personal.
Not at all. Fire away…lol.
Tell us a little about your family.
Well, as most of you already know, I’m a proud Jersey girl and I live in Central New Jersey with my husband, kids and mother-in-law. My husband and I have been together for 27 years (marrried for 23!) and we have 2 children of our own and also have legal custody of 2 of my nieces. So that’s a total of 4 kids; ages range from 13-20. My mother-in-law also lives with us as well as a close family friend who we have kinda “adopted” as an honorary member of the clan. Add to that a few assorted pets—we have a pretty packed house…lol.
As a child, what did you dream of being when you grew up?
First and foremost I wanted to be a wife and mother…so I guess I got my wish!! I never really had an overwhelming desire to be a career-driven working Mom but then again, I did want to accomplish something outside of the home that I could be proud of so I guess you could say I got lucky on both counts.
What do you do to unwind and relax?
Me? Relax? That’s funny…lol!
Ok, all kidding aside, I love to read, watch movies and hang out with my family. Since my hubby works so many hours, I love it when we can just take a hour or two to hang out together and maybe go for a drive, or go get coffee…whatever our schedule allows.
How do your family and friends feel about your book or writing in general?
I’m an extremely lucky girl and thrilled to say that they have all been extrememly supportive and encouraging. I am truly blessed!
Where did your inspiration for Love Bleeds come from?
Basically from my love for reading romance novels; both contemporary and paranormal (PNR being my fave!!) watching vampire movies and my undying love for Rock’n’Roll/ Heavy metal music.
Is anything in your book based on real life experiences or purely all imagination?
Well, since I have never met a vampire but I have met a few rockstars and I am yet to meet “Vampire Rockstar”…I would have to say that it is mostly based on my vivid imagination.
Which one of the characters in Love Bleeds would you like to invite to dinner, and why?
Oooh, that’s a tough one. I love to cook and have been told I’m a pretty decent chef but Joseph and Phillip don’t actually eat, so although I’d love to sit down with either of them and have a good ole’ chat, I fear I would be a bit insulted if they didn’t at least try my homecooked meal so…I guess I would have to say Nina. She and I are alike in a lot of ways and think we would have plenty to talk about and probably get along very well.
What was your favorite chapter (or scene) to write and why?
I have a few actually, but if I’d have to pick one, I would choose the scene between Joseph and Kat when he first arrives in England after they have been apart. The sexual tension between them is so hot and his sultry bravado just does it for me. Their playful banter was a lot of fun to write. (Don’t wanna give away too much for those who have yet to read Love Bleeds.)
Did any particular band or genre of music inspire the band “Slang” in Love Bleeds?
Definitely Rock’n’Roll and heavy metal with a dash of alternative rock. ‘Slang’ does have a somewhat personal meaning for me… (Hence my Twitter handle and the band’s name.) I’ll just leave it at that…lol.
The cover for Love Bleeds is very sexy. Who designed the cover?
So glad you like it!! I purchased the original shot from ShutterShock and changed the colors and resolution; created the print and overall designs of the front and back covers. Hubby helped with layout and formatting. We did it ourselves, start to finish so thank you very much.
How many books do you plan to have in the Only After Dark series? Can you tell us who’s in the next book and when we can get our hands on it?
So far I have ideas for at least two more installments but hopefully, if the popularity of the series continues, I’ll write more. Next up in Book Two—I’ll delve into Phillip and Nina’s relationship. Reveal why they were fated to one another, how and why Phillip was turned and wreak alittle havoc on their relationship. Most, if not all of the original cast will be included in some way or another, plus a few “new” and interesting characters will be introduced.
No definite release date scheduled as of yet, but if all goes well, I’m hoping for a late summer 2011 release.
Have you written a book you love that you have not been able to get published?
Well, Love Bleeds was…but thanks to the incrediable option of self-publishing that dream has finally become a reality.
What has been the toughest criticism given to you as an author? What has been the best compliment?
I suppose the toughest criticism would have been that my writing wasn’t strong enough to beat out the competition for a publishing contract. The best one? It’s a toss up between being told that my writing talent was so honest and true that my characters literally come to life on the books pages, making them real and believable; easy to relate to and literally fall in love with..-and- That Love Bleeds should be made into a movie!
What are your thoughts on the ebook craze? Do you feel the ereaders have helped authors that are just starting out?
I think the ebook craze was inevitable. Today’s technology makes is so easy for us to take our favorite book(s) along with us wherever we go in one convenient package. And I definitely believe that the popularity of ereaders has helped out already established authors as well as us “newbies”. They provide a great deal of much needed exposure for newly published and up&coming authors.
When you’re reading, do you use an ereader or do you prefer the physical book?
Honestly, I prefer a physical book. I guess these days that makes me sound a little old fashioned but I love the feel, smell and thrill of holding a physical paperback. (esp. when its your own…lol)
What kind of books do you like to read? Who are some of your favorite authors?
I love paranormal romance and a bit of a “thriller “ romance. My favorite authors include Laurell K. Hamilton, Lara Adrian, Gena Showalter, Keri Arthur, Larissa Ione, Kerrelyn Sparks, Katie McAllister and of course, Anne Rice.
If you could collaborate with any author, who would it be?
Tough question. I would have to say Laurell K. Hamilton. I have read every book in her Anita Blake series and admire her talent immensely. It would be an honor to work with her.
How do you market your work? What avenues have you found to work best for your genre?
I spend most of time Tweeting, Facebook’ing and posting on dicussion boards that cater to romance/PNR authors. Since most readers don’t have a way to let you know where they discovered/purchased your book unless they’re a follower of yours on Twitter or FB, its basically like taking a shot in the dark if you’re a new author. The best way to get your book noticed and seen by the general public that I have encountered are not only places like Twitter, Google or Facebook but Goodreads, blogs & websites dedicated to romance authors and/or readers and the traditional good old “word of mouth”.
What is the hardest part about getting your book in the hands of readers?
Promoting without the luxury of being available on the physical bookstore shelves such as Borders, Barnes & Noble and local privately owned book retailers.
What are some of the best tools available today for writers, especially those just starting out?
The World Wide Web!!! Look up websites & blogs that provide you, as an author, opportunities to spotlight and promote your work. The romance community, in general, is like one big wonderfully helpful family. I have met so many awesome people and made amazing new friends on this journey into self-publishing and promotion. I am truly blessed to have been so graciously accepted into the romance community and have acquired such wonderfully loyal followers & fans. Nearly all of them in one way or another has graciously helped me out by reading, reviewing, tweeting, posting and interviewing me; depending on their own personal resources; and it has produced an amazing response not only for me personally as a newly published author, but for Love Bleeds’ popularity. I consider myself extremely lucky and hope they all know how deeply grateful I am and how much I truly appreciate and value their friendship, following and support!
Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
Yes I do… DON’T give up!!! If you truly love what you do then have faith and keep pressing forward. Graciously accept and appreciate each friend you make; listen to those who take the time to offer their opinion and critique; heed the advice of those who have taken the chance and made it!
Don’t shoot for the stars…aim for the clouds and if your journey takes you farther, consider yourself blessed!
Thanks again for stopping by and answering some questions for us. Is there anything you’d like to add or say to the readers?
My pleasure…thank you so much for having me. I would just like to thank all my family, friends, followers and fans for their loyalty, friendship, love and support! Without them, I know that I would have never made it this far and the journey wouldn’t have been nearly as fun!
To my readers…Thank you from the bottom of my heart for buying, reading and enjoying Love Bleeds; your feedback has been awesome and I hope I can continue to intrique you with future books.
