Shifting Currents (A Paranormal Shapeshifter Romance) by Lissa Matthews

Nicole Martin’s life changed when, at the age of eight, vampire slaves rebelled leaving her family dead, and her narrowly getting away with her life. Now she is a grown woman with a healthy fear and hatred for vampires. One night she is kidnapped by a vampire named Riker who is hell-bent on revenge. While she is with him she becomes confused when she begins to rely on the vampire she should despise.

Nicole is a bright woman who has done great things for humankind. Some things she has done have been at the expense of vampires, but despite this, it is apparent that she is a kind and caring person. Riker is a turned vampire. He is handsome, strong, and he has brains as well as brawn. He is a very valuable member of his clan because he knows how to get things done when it comes to their protection.

I am sure a lot of you have read Larissa Ione’s  Demonica series (if not, what are you waiting for?) Well, I can’t tell you how excited I was to learn that she started a new series. I loved Bound by Night! The characters were fascinating, not just the lead characters, but every last one of them. There was a lot of excitement, and as expected by any Ione book, it was sexy as hell! All of these wonderful attributes are not what grabbed me though; the thing that got my attention was a whole new angle to the vampire story. I liked her telling of how vampires came to be, or how it was thought they came to be. I found it so fascinating that I am anticipating learning more. Of course, Ione gives readers a wondrous story full of vivid imagery that draws you into her world making Bound by Night the perfect escape!

Nicole Martin was only eight years old when she narrowly survived a massacre: her family’s vampire slaves rebelled and killed everyone in her household. Twenty years later, Nicole now dedicates herself to finding a vaccine against vampirism…and eradicating the gruesome memories that give her nightmares.

Riker, a member of the wild vampire Moon Clan, is haunted by his own demons—his wife Lorraine had been captured and enslaved by the Martin family. It was during a botched escape attempt that she was killed, along with their unborn child. Still wracked with grief and anger, Riker is now fueled solely by the desire to rescue vampire slaves…and slaughter their owners.

When Riker stumbles upon Nicole in a chance meeting, he immediately recognizes her as a member of the Martin family that once enslaved his wife—and she recognizes him as the wild vampire she saw kissing a pregnant slave in the moments before her violent death—an image that has haunted her dreams for years.

When Riker kidnaps Nicole and they spend a night together in a cave on the way back to his clan, suddenly they begin to realize that they aren’t as different from one another as they may have thought—and they’re finding themselves drawn to one another…

Logan Black wants nothing to do with commitment, and huge weddings just make him cringe. Suddenly he finds himself attracted to a werewolf hating wedding planner named Veronica Vale. Now he is torn between keeping his distance from the woman he is being paid to protect or protecting her while he takes a chance with his heart.

Logan is a hit man and bodyguard for the Seattle Wolf Pack. He has been hired by Jake, his best friend and pack mate, to protect his fiancé’s sister from an obsessed werewolf that is stalking her. Veronica has hated werewolves since her sister was attacked by one. Her sister has moved on, and even fell in love with a shifter, but Veronica just can’t seem to let go of her prejudices. Logan and Veronica have to be one of the most entertaining couples I have encountered in some time!

I enjoyed the first book in the Seattle Wolf Pack Series, but in Four Weddings and a Werewolf, Miller really stepped up her game. I felt closer to the main characters this time around. The banter between Logan and Veronica kept me in stitches (just wait until you read the flower shop scene) and Logan was just more down to earth than the hero in the last book. Miller’s books are charming, and although there is plenty of action and heat they are lighthearted. It is nice to read a book and just enjoy it without questioning or over analyzing the contents.

I have already had the pleasure of reading the third book in the series titled So I Married a Werewolf, so now I am eagerly waiting for the next sexy shifter to come along!

To have and to howl…

Logan Black, former Marine and bodyguard for the Seattle Wolf Pack, hates weddings and has no plan to walk the path to matrimonial misery. But when he’s hired to protect a hot-to-trot wedding planner with a werewolf stalker, he’s forced to put his feelings aside. Not such an easy task when the damsel can turn him on with a single smoldering glance.

Wedding planner Veronica Vale knows werewolves exist, but hates them. One bit her sister, changing their lives forever. When a sexy Marine shows his gorgeous face at one of her wedding appointments, Veronica finds it hard to focus on the task at hand.

The chemistry drawing Logan and Veronica together seems fated, but with Logan’s playboy attitude, Veronica’s hatred for werewolves, and a stalker lurking in the shadows, these two need more than passion to keep them together.

Drake Wilder seems to have it all. He is handsome, rich, and is the successful CEO of a company that bears his name. He is also an Alpha wolf along with his twin brother Silas. His father, who was the Alpha of the Seattle wolf pack, declared the brother who was the first to find their fated mate would be his successor in leading the pack. An uneasy truce is shattered when he meets Emelia Hudson, a fiery bartender and a temp secretary for his company. Silas may not be Drake’s only problem; it seems Emelia may have an agenda of her own.

Drake and Emelia couldn’t be more different. Drake is reclusive and reserved while Emelia is a woman who speaks her mind and isn’t intimidated by doing the unexpected. I liked what she brought out in Drake, with Emelia he lets loose and becomes a more charming character.

I really like the way Miller writes. Her stories are steamy as well as witty, and they make for an uncomplicated read that is just entertaining. Gone with the Wolf  has the rich guy meets the poor girl storyline we have seen before, but the humor blended with romance keeps it fresh and fun.

If you are a fan of shifters as I am and yearn for a story that is lively and straightforward put Gone with the Wolf on your reading list.

All Shaylah Graymist ever wanted to do was fly a ship of her own. Now she flies as a Captain for the coalition. There are things about the coalition she disagrees with, such as slavery, but what can she do to change it?  While on leave she is sent a sex slave by a friend as a reward for her heroism. She has no intention of forcing this man to do anything against his will. Wolf is taken by the beautiful pilot, and is confused by the way she treats him. When it becomes imperative to rely on one another to survive it is unclear they will be able to see past the great chasm that divides them.

Shaylah is strong, brave, has brains, and a kind soul. Her respect for others and feelings of what is fair has her second guessing her path. She has a view about love and sex that her people find somewhat antiquated, but I found her views to be beautiful and romantic. Wolf has not seen kindness in a very long time. The coalition destroyed his home planet, the people he loved, and then he was enslaved; understandably trust does not come easy for him.  Beneath this man’s life of forced servitude lies the heart of a warrior. These characters are complex and highly emotional especially when it comes to each other.

I am a fan of futuristic intergalactic romance stories, because you not only have the ability to see the possibilities of what the future could be, but you get to travel the cosmos! I love the feeling of being swept away to a whole new world; reading for me is about escaping reality if only for a short time, and what better way to do that than a journey through time and space? The concept for Lord of the Storm was amazing, but there were times I was a little disappointed with the whole flow of the novel. There were times that it was just way too slow. There were a couple of points in the book where my interest began to wane just a little. What kept me going was that Davis was able to depict the complex feelings of these characters with such ease that I felt I had to read on to see how the story of Shaylah and Wolf ended. She has this wonderful ability to strip the character down to raw emotion, and in turn draws an emotional response from the reader. Overall I would say Lord of the Storm was a pretty good read, and I would absolutely read more books by Justine Davis.

Shifting Currents is a dystopian paranormal tale of life 20 year after a meteor annihilated most of the world. The synopsis sounded like a very unique and exciting read so I was anxious to jump into it. There were a lot of  fantastic characters with very different stories but none ever overshadowed the main characters Lucas and Bethany. I tried very hard to get into the actual story, but found it very difficult as it seemed like there was a lot of backstory missing, almost as if there was a first book in the series that I missed reading. I was never really able to get a good visual in my head of the world the author had created. I think a prologue of some sort would’ve been very helpful. Most of the story was a smooth read, there were definitely parts that I had to stop and back up a couple pages because it seems like I missed several pages. With shifters and humans with electrical powers, trolls and dragons, spirits and automans, it just felt like things were being thrown into the story for no reason especially since some were only talked about for a page or two and then dropped without ever being seen in the story.

There were some very positive aspects to this book so don’t think I was completely disappointed. The characters were fantastic! Lucas and Bethany had sparks flying off the pages as well as all the other side characters. I really hope that Trevor adds to the series because the potential to add to these characters is huge! Besides the fact that the characters are very well rounded and really blend well together in the story, the sex was off the charts hot! You get a bit of everything. There is M/M, F/F, M/F, and even some F/F/M, so everyone has something to look forward to no matter what your preference and believe me, when it comes to those particular scenes, there is nothing lacking. While I only give this book 3 stars, I would certainly give the next book a chance if the author adds to the series. If you’re a fan of dystopian tales and steamy sex then you will want to give Shifting Currents a try.

From Amazon:

Publication Date: June 3, 2014

After the meteorite wiped out civilization and most of the population, it took thirty years to scrabble together rudiments of society again. Sex is the main currency, for those who haven’t mutated special abilities.

Bethany, a Tech, is able to channel electricity through her body and charge up electronics. When she saves a Shifter girl about to be sold at auction, the girl’s brother, Lucas, offers to repay the debt with his body. While Bethany would love to have Lucas at her beck and call, she’d rather have sex with someone who wanted her as a partner instead of an obligation. But unable to resist the sexy Shifter, she agrees to his terms.

When an opportunity presents itself to travel cross the ravaged countryside to loot the remains of California, Bethany believes this is the best chance for her to find her own brother, a rogue Shifter on the run for a crime he didn’t commit. Lucas wants to go, too, to free his Shifter pack.
The caravan members are expected to provide sexual services to the owners in exchange for passage out and back. As the lines between pleasure and payment become blurred, Bethany struggles to remain human while the pull of the energy feels good enough to leave her meat sack body behind. Can Lucas learn to ground her against the shifting currents?
