Excerpts:

1. The Beast Within

“Tell me more about these Tuatha De Danann.” Karina whispered as she sat back down in her seat.

Xavier was silent for a moment taking in Karina’s face again. “What do you want to know?”

“What are they?”

“Celtic faeries, I told you.”

Karina laughed nervously and shifted uncomfortably in her chair, she was trying to listen to what Xavier was telling her but it was all sounding farfetched.

“What do you imagine when I say the word faerie?” he asked her. “Diminutive pixies that live in toadstool houses? Tinkerbell? They are all children story characters, works of fiction. The Tuatha De Danann were fierce warriors, a race of nomads who broke away from the Pelasgians in 1900 B.C. They left Greece and called themselves the Tuatha De Danann and migrated north, eventually settling in Ireland. They took with them their four sacred treasures, The Stone of Virtue, the Sword of Lugh, the Spear of Victory and the Cauldron of the Gods.”

“You think I look like Danu? That’s why you called me Tuatha; you think I’m one of them?”

“It’s a strange coincidence that you have been named Tuatha, and you share a striking resemblance to them.” Xavier replied.

Karina shook her head. “But I’m no warrior; I can’t go into an elevator without hyperventilating. I’m a doormat, people walk all over me all the time. I have spent my whole life doing what other people tell me to do, what I think will make them happy.”

Xavier smirked, “You can’t go in the water either.”

“But you said the Tuatha De Danann arrived in Ireland in a mist. They would have had to travel over water,” she pointed out.

“That was part of the spell Manannan put on them. They could only live on the hill and in their Otherworld fortress.”

“Why are you no good for me Xavier?” her fingers ran through his hair playfully.

“You haven’t worked it out yet?” his mouth pulled up on one side.

She shook her head, “No. Tell me.”

“Do you wonder why I bring out the aggression in you? Feelings you didn’t think you were capable of.”

Karina nodded.

“It’s because of what you are Karina. You need to embrace it.”

Karina rolled her eyes, “The faeries again. Do you know how much trouble that caused with my family? They believe that Tuatha is a nickname my Grandmothers wayward Great Aunt, called her bastard daughter. Apparently I look like her so they decided to call me Tuatha because they thought it would be cute!”

“Your family have no idea?” Xavier’s eyes lit up.

“Not that they are telling me, but my mother is avoiding my calls now and will barely speak to me so I dare say they have an idea about something. Let me guess Xavier, you’re one too?”

He smiled trying to fight back a laugh, “No, I’m definitely not.”

“Then what are you? What is it about you that gets under my skin, and in my head?”

Xavier laughed, “You wouldn’t believe me if I told you,” and he moved from the table but Karina pushed him back. “Tell me,” she demanded.

2. Haunted

Ian held Antonio’s attention and Ronan ran to Karina. Taking a knife from a sheath strapped to his ankle, he cut through the ropes that kept her captive against the tree. As the bounds fell to the ground, she moved her arms, trying to assist the circulation. She winced and held her elbow. “You’re hurt,” Ronan commented.

“I’ll be fine,” Karina growled.

He nodded and handed her his spear, “Don’t let me down girlie.”

When the ancient timber touched Karina’s hands, she felt the power course through her. An unbelievable rush that made her forget her ailments and strengthen every fibre inside her. Karina took a few long deep breaths to focus. She looked to Antonio and the beating he was inflicting on Ian, the man she loved, the one who would die to protect her. She spun the spear around her hand and adjusted her grip before she ran at the lycanthrope that was here to kill her.

When she was a few feet away, Karina stabbed her weapon into the earth and leveraged herself, kicking Antonio in the face. The impact sending him sailing backward through the air and landing on his back with a loud thud as the air rushed from his lungs. Ian stood frozen, looking at Karina “Are you ok?”

Karina’s lip twitched up on one side and she pushed Ian back and moved her body in front of his, protecting him from Antonio. He had now changed into his lycanthrope form and swung a gnarled hairy claw which connected with Karina’s arm, leaving a long gash that ran from her shoulder to her good elbow. Karina cried out in pain and clutched her wound. Ian pulled her toward him “Karina!” he gasped. As the beast before them snarled and took another swipe. Ian was able to pull Karina out of the way and he waited for retaliation.

She looked at Ian and grimaced through the pain. “I’m ok,” she assured. “I’m going to finish this,” and she kicked the Spear of Victory from the ground up into her hands and swaggered toward the monster that was Antonio. “You want me, come and get me,” she jeered.

“Karina, no!” Ian started but Ronan held him back.

“No brother, she has to do this.”

A voice spoke in Karina’s head. So you have finally worked out that you are not strong enough for me. That only the descendant of Danu possesses the strength to take on an ancient being. Karina ignored the agony she was in and the protests from her body and started stalking Antonio. They circled each other and Karina twirled her weapon around her hands. You know how this will end Karina why not give yourself over to me now.

“Never!” Karina shouted and lunged toward the lycanthrope that thirsted for her blood.

3. Journey

The car was dangerously silent as it sped south through the countryside. Karina’s eyes didn’t move from Aedan’s silhouette as he concentrated on the road ahead. Lines of worry were forming around his eyes. In the back with her, Ian and Lorcan drifted in and out of consciousness as Lakeyn drove. How dare he order me around, she thought, and what exactly did he mean by her and Ian meeting our fate?

“Are you going to speak to me or continue to throw visual daggers at me?” He asked turning around.

“Let’s get one thing straight. You don’t order me around.”

“If you weren’t hell bent of trying to get yourself killed then I wouldn’t have to.”

Karina’s mouth dropped open. “I’m not trying to get myself killed!”

Aedan raised his eyebrows. “In the last few hours you have attempted to swim across the North Channel through a swarm of Lion’s Mane jellyfish, tried to slit your wrists, went toe to toe with a lycanthrope and wanted to run into the night, on the full moon, looking for a Guardian.”

She crossed her arms over her chest and scoffed. “You should have been with me for the last few weeks then.”

He shook his head and laughed. “You are like no Tuatha De Danann I have ever met. I’ll give you that.”

“Until a year ago I hadn’t even heard of the Danann, so excuse me if I don’t conform to protocol.”

Lakeyn let out a deep belly laugh and Aedan joined him. Karina blushed with embarrassment.

“You’re in for a surprise,” Lakeyn commented. The two continued to laugh at Karina’s expense a little longer before Lakeyn turned the car around and stopped.

“What are we doing?”

“Just checking,” Lakeyn answered as he stepped out of the car and listened.

“I don’t feel anything,” Karina said and looked out into the night as her fingers tightened around the handle of Ian’s blade. Her knees was bouncing with anticipation, they were so close she could sense it. Something was urging her to continue on. Lakeyn strode away from the car and began to jog. Aedan undid his seatbelt and turned to Karina. “Stay here.”

“Yeah right,” she scoffed and opened the door.

Aedan followed Lakeyn and Karina looked around. The moon was high above and illuminated the landscape. A man was lying in the field and Lakeyn was now at his side trying to rouse him. Aedan stopped and turned to Karina, his face was sympathetic and she knew it must be Noah. Running down the hill she joined them.

Journey is the third book of the Beast Within novellas. In this installment we follow Karina and Ian as they overcome obstacles on their way to the Otherworld.

I must admit that I have become quite enamored with Karina and Ian as a couple.  In Journey the readers really see the depth of love and protectiveness between the two of them. We are also introduced to several more Guardians in this installment.

Crowe gets off to a fast start in this novella.  I was in for quite a ride from the very first page, and I could not tear my eyes away until I read the very last page. All though all of these short stories are full of emotion, Journey by far conveys more than the rest. There were times I found my heart clenching as I pushed forward to see what happened next. I like Crowe’s writing style; she delivers a fast paced, easy, and entertaining read.

I have really enjoyed reading these novellas, with Journey being my favorite thus far. Once again she gives readers an ending that will leave you yearning to see what happens next!

Ian has been summoned by the Goddess Danu to the Otherworld, and Karina will not let him go without a fight.
With a Tutha De Danann that is unable to cross water, getting from Australia to Ireland will make for an interesting journey. Supernatural beings, sworn enemies and the full moon are only half of the risk as they try to cross three continents. Drug smuggling, guerrilla kidnapping and lycans on the prowl will hamper their travels.
Davarus, self-proclaimed King of the lycanthropes is building an army and on the move. Danger faces these forbidden lovers at every turn.
Would you travel to the ends of the earth for the one you love?

Haunted is the follow up novella to The Beast Within. Karina has now accepted who she is and is learning to deal with her faerie powers. Her relationship with her boyfriend and Guardian Ian is getting back on track. Things seem to be going relatively well until a 600 year old lycanthrope comes knocking.

I have liked Karina since meeting her for the first time in The Beast Within. My opinion of Ian has skyrocket since the last story and I have to admit I am starting to harbor a bit of a book crush! I really like these two characters as a couple now.

Once again Crowe delivers a wonderful story in a short amount of time. There are secrets   revealed, some suspense, and some heart stopping action! I was so happy that the story continued on.

Crowe leaves the reader with quite the cliffhanger in this installment, so I am anxious to break into the next story! I am finding that I am growing partial to this alternate world of this amazing faerie, the guardians, and even those pesky werewolves!

Karina has now discovered her abilities, but this only puts her in further danger. With a 600 year old lycanthrope thirsting for her blood, Ian must summon the help of his brother Ronan, the keeper of the Spear of Victory, a treasure sacred to the Tuatha De Danann.
Can the two Guardians protect Karina, or will her secret ultimately bring destruction upon them all?

The Beast Within is a novella by Melissa Crowe. Karina is a mental health nurse whose stagnant five year relationship with her accountant boyfriend Ian has just ended.  She soon meets the gorgeous Xavier, who lets her know things aren’t always what they seem.

From the first pages of the book I became really comfortable and settled right into the story. Crowe gives the reader a relatable character in Karina. I mean who can’t relate to a relationship that has ended? You immediately begin rooting for her, and even your heart skips a beat with her first interaction with the sexy Xavier!

Although the story is short Crowe gives the reader everything they need; an interesting storyline, a little hot sex, and a huge splash of the paranormal element. She even manages to throw the reader a couple of curves! I didn’t want the book to end; there were hundreds of questions flittering through my mind in particular about Karina and her heritage.

I liked the way the novella ended. It gave closure, but left things open so that we may see Karina’s story evolve. I am really hoping to see a lot more from Crowe and these characters. If you are in the mood for a quick and yet entertaining paranormal read I recommend The Beast Within.

Legion of Darkness is the second book of The Hunter Everett Chronicles. Being special has laid the weight of the world on young Hunter’s back. His mother’s failing health sends him on a quest that will test Hunter in ways he never imagined.

The more I read about Hunter’s character the more I like him. He is so humble, thoughtful, and honest readers won’t be able to help rooting for him. There are other main characters that are equally likeable. Ava, the human friend of Hunter and girlfriend of Riley has an inner strength that shines, and not just by mortal standards. Kyle is a lamia that Ava has befriended, and I find him utterly fascinating. I found myself hoping to see a storyline develop for him in future books. Finally I am going to mention Hunter’s best friend Riley. He definitely keeps the story interesting, but as a person he is quite the egotistical ass. Though he comes through when needed he is that one character I love to hate and therefore would miss him if he was gone!

Guardamano has written a wonderful follow up with Legion of Darkness, and I enjoyed it even more than I did the first book. I really admire the fact that the Hunter Everett is a departure from the usual vampire fare. In my opinion it has almost a sci-fi feel to it. Although with the exception to the last part of the book I wouldn’t consider this a fast paced read, but the storyline is so interesting it doesn’t matter. Guardamano weaves a story that is surely going to reach out and grab the reader. The attention to detail is what sets this story apart along with its twists and turns.

I was really happy with the way Legion of Darkness ended. It left me hanging in a way that did not disappoint, but instead left me anticipating the direction the series takes!

Unbridled is a collection of short stories that are set in the world of the Alex Crocker Seer series. The reader gets a look at how the warriors and their mates came together and it is done in the females’ perspective. I have read the first two books of the series titled Unforeseen and Unveiled and so far I have really enjoyed the series. Unbridled was an extremely fun read for me. The thing I enjoyed most was the fact I learned about the history of the couples I have grown to adore in the books. My eyes were opened to the strengths of these females, Grimley created strong characters that will certainly earn admiration from the readers. I liked the lead-in to each story, which was a stroke of genius on Grimley’s part, because it forged a bond between the women. Having read the series I already had a relationship with the characters and I think it would be best to read the first two books before hand, but the glossary in the back will give first time readers a guide and they will still find the stories quite enjoyable. If you are a fan of vampire novels that are filled with action, hot as hell warriors, strong females, and romance pick up the series. If you already are a fan of Alex Crocker this book of short stories is a must have! A wonderful incentive to pick up this read is that proceeds will be donated to Breast Cancer Research and V-Day.

“Think Law and Order SUV meets The Breakfast Club” was Ellie’s trite explanation of what Alex had been dragged into. Add a few fangs, Fifty Shades of Oversharing, and a dash of Dr. Phil, and she was in for quite a Thursday night.

Alex couldn’t deny she had become the pint-sized poster child for PTSD lately, but she didn’t exactly expect to find a support group for teachers turned vampire chew toys in Bristol, MA. Listening to the tales of the four other females gathered to help her heal, however, she accepts that perhaps both the worst and the best of life can blossom from the unexpected.

Unbridled is a novella-length collection of four connected stories focusing on the unlikely friendships and less likely lovers of the female characters from the Alex Crocker series.

Proceeds from the sale of these stories are being donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and V-Day. See the author’s website for more information: www.laurengrimley.com

“Grace and Dignity”
Even a female whose mating has been arranged most of her life still thinks about what she wants in a mate. Not one of the qualities Sarah had hoped for were easily evident in her betrothed, the future Regan of the Rectinatti coven. Perhaps, though, there were more layers to Darian than he liked to reveal, but how does a subject unmask a prince?

“Rules and Recollections”
You can’t fall in love with someone you barely recall, but that, Vivian supposed, was the point. After a terse meeting with the Knower, a mind reader, memory manipulator, and the coven’s most notorious lecher, Vivian isn’t herself. She can’t shake the feeling that the solution to her mood lurks just below the surface of her consciousness. Only plunging into darkness, though, will bring everything to light.

“Blood and Secrecy”
The shared need for blood brought them together, but individual desires for secrecy are keeping them apart. Each already left behind a life of privilege for reasons the other likely couldn’t understand. Now both Rocky and Ellie need to decide if they’re willing to open up about their pasts in order to ensure a future.

The Reason:

While I was writing these stories, it occurred to me that, although I was focusing more on the romance this time, I was once again creating some tenacious heroines who’d all faced varying degrees of adversity. I wondered vaguely if I could perhaps publish these tales myself in order to donate the proceeds to women’s charities who help such real-life women. Then, just as I was finishing a rough draft of the project, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer for a second time. And for the second time in my life I wanted to do something, anything, to help support her and other women facing the same terrifying challenge. My knees no longer allow me to do the kind of training needed to complete a second triathlon for my mom, as I had the first time around. Besides, in the years since high school I’d found another passion: writing.

Combining my love of story telling, strong heroines, and girl power, I came up with the idea for Romance for a Reason. It is one small step I can take to help end some rather formidable issues facing women: breast cancer and violence. I’m hoping others will take it with me this month, making October (National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and National Domestic Violence Awareness Month) a month of celebrating women’s strength and beauty.

How you can help:

Read some romance. Proceeds from Unbridled will be donated to the two charities listed here.

Donate. Make your own individual donation to these two charities or choose a local charity supporting these and other causes affecting women in your area. To learn more about each charity and my reasons for choosing them, visit the Romance for a Reason page. Or click through to donate directly.

Share. Tweet, status update, review, or just chat with friends about the books, the tour, and the charities (mine or yours)!

It’s not about the money we raise, the miles we run (or slowly plod), or even the strong females we read and write about. It’s about recognizing there’s something, anything, we can do, and doing it. For me it was writing and sharing some feminist romance with fangs. What will you do to change the colors of fall from red and orange to purple and pink?

LaurenAbout the author:

Lauren Grimley lives in central Massachusetts where she grew up, but her heart is on the beaches of Cape Cod where she spends as much of her time as possible. After graduating from Boston University she became a middle school English teacher. She now balances writing, reading, and correcting, all with a cat on her lap and a glass of red wine close by.

Unforeseen, the first novel in the Alex Crocker Seer series, was Lauren’s debut novel. She was thrilled this spring to continue the series with Unveiled and now Unbridled. To learn more about her or her writing or to connect with her online visit her website at www.laurengrimley.com

Tor Burns is a non-infected vampire who has taken refuge in the Tack Enterprises underground facility. Having survived a vicious attack with his fellow vampire Harrow, he now has a new purpose. Vampires afflicted with Gates Syndrome are still being hunted, and Tor is committed to saving them from the clutches of the Vampire Council. With a semi-cure within their grasp, Tor is reluctant to accept his new assignment: bodyguard to Allison Tack, the daughter of their fallen leader. Armed with an abrasive personality and fierce loyalty, Tor approaches this new responsibility with serious determination despite his reservations.

Vampire Allison Tack is the beautiful and timid co-heir of the Tack fortune. Infected and hunted by the Council, those lucky enough to have known her father are determined to keep her safe.  A walking target wherever she goes, Allison wants to learn how to protect herself, but no one is listening. Sick of being the helpless one in the company of trained fighters around her, Allison vows to prove that she can fight alongside the best of them.

Meanwhile, the harem leader, Melissa, is hell-bent on unraveling any clue about her son Demetrius’s fate. He disappeared without a word, and time has made her desperate. Stepping up her efforts, she seeks the help of Demetrius’s son, Zane. With the additional manpower, Melissa finds the lair of the suspected vampires and wages war against them.

Thrown together by necessity, Tor and Allison can’t continue to deny their attraction to each other. Tor wants to give in to his feelings for her, but old demons resurface. He must confront the past to prevent losing the best thing that ever happened to him.

A life must be given for a life taken. Will Tor have to sacrifice himself before Allison pays the price?

Author Bio

Lorenz Font discovered her love of writing after reading a celebrated novel that inspired one idea after another. She is currently enjoying the buzz from her debut novel Hunted, the first installment of The Gates Legacy trilogy.

Writing is therapeutic for Lorenz, and a perfect day consists of writing and playing with her characters while listening to her ever-growing music collection. She enjoys dabbling in different genres, with an intense focus on angst and the redemption of flawed characters. Her fascination with romantic twists is a mainstay in all her stories.

Lorenz currently lives in California with her husband, children, and two demanding dogs. She divides her time between a full-time job as a Business Office Manager for a hospital and her busy writing schedule.
