Please welcome Ashlynne Laynne to VRB.
Ashlynne is the author of The Progeny series and has stopped by today to tell us a little about the series and to give us all a chance to learn more about her too.
Hi Ashlynne! Thank you for stopping by VRB and answering some questions for our readers.
Before I begin, I’d like to thank Rhonda for having me on VRB today. I’m excited to be here.
Tell us a little about yourself and your family.
I’m a wife and mother of one who lives in North Carolina. I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for vampires and witches. I’m an avid horror movie fan and will watch anything in the horror movie genre. I work full time and write part time, but I hope to write full time in the future. I’m a Muse, Korn and Rob Zombie fan, but I’m eclectic and enjoy most media and music.
What do you enjoy doing when you aren’t writing?
I enjoy reading, but I tend to stay away from vamp books because it’s my writing genre. I’m a huge romance lover though. Cooking is also a passion of mine. I only wish I had more time to do it.
Who are some of the writers that inspire you?
I love anything Stephen King, but Anne Rice and Stephenie Meyer made me want to write about vampires. I consider Ms. Rice the grandmother of vampire literature and Stephenie Meyer the mother of the modern day vampire. In my writing, I strive to write vampires that step outside the box and are a “new breed of vampire.”
What is your favorite book of all time?
Hmmmmm….this is a very hard question. I’ve read many that I enjoyed, but I think the one that left a lasting impression on me had to be The Shining by Stephen King. I’ve never had so much fun reading something that truly scared the crap out of me.
How long have you been writing?
I’ve been writing almost two years now.
Where did you get the information or ideas to write The Progeny Series?
The idea for The Progeny came two years ago when I had a dream about an intense and gorgeous guy wearing a strange necklace around his neck. I immediately woke up and began drawing that amulet. No one but my husband and cover artist have seen that hideous drawing.
Can you tell our readers a little about the series?
At its core, The Progeny is simply a story about a man and woman who fall in love, and the fact that he’s a half-blood (half-human, half vampire) and she’s a Wiccan human are secondary factors. When we meet Ascher, he’s grumpy. Frankly, who could blame him? He’s engaged to seal to Ursula—a cold and careless vampire who wants nothing more than to get her hands on a bloodstone— and he feels conflicted about his existence.
All of that changes when he meets Shawnette McCutchin. She’s beautiful, intriguing and possesses some of the most potent blood that he’s ever smelled. A war immediately begins inside Ascher. He craves Shauna’s blood just as much as he craves her body and the closer they get, the harder it is for him to control his urges. After Ascher calls off the sealing to Ursula, the trouble begins. His family’s peaceful period ends when Ursula’s army attacks the Rousseaus.
This series is about a family of which we’ve never seen before. They share a common mortal and immortal bloodline but loyalty is the thread that holds this clan together. Once you become a part of this family, the others will risk their lives to protect you. We see examples of this throughout the journey. There is no shortage of romance, steam and surprises in The Progeny Series but these books are for adults and contain adult sensuality, language and themes.
I really liked Ascher and Shauna; who are your favorite characters in the series and why?
I love Ash and Shauna, but I think the character that I sympathize with the most is the evil Ursula. I know, she’s the villain and meant to be hated, but she has such a horrendous past that her ire is almost justified. I’m currently writing her backstory for book three and it’s so chilling and macabre.
I am also a Quinn fan. He seems to be a bit mischievous, and in ways quite a bit different from his brothers. Are the readers going to see more of him in books to come?
Ahhhhh…another Quinn fan. There are quite a few of those around. I wrote Quinn as a comic relief of sorts. Ash and Gabe are in such intense relationships with the sisters, and I felt like there needed to be someone to balance it all out. Enter Quinn. He gets on Ash’s nerves with all of his modern lingo and quick-witted quips, but he’s Ash’s go to for anything of the sexual nature. I nicknamed him “the muscle” because he is always up to kick a little butt. Oh yes, Quinn will be around in the coming books.
If you had to choose someone to play the roles of Ascher and Shauna who would you choose?
Thomas Dekker and Zoe Kravitz look most like the characters that I imagined.
Do you know how many books will be in the series?
I’m planning six to eight in the series, a two book series for Katy and Gabe and a couple of spin off books for the brothers.
What are you working on right now? Can you tell us a little about it?
I am currently working on books three and four of the Progeny Series, book one of my upcoming Rocker Series, and an untitled novella WIP.
Where can the readers go to purchase your books?

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
