Shifters of 2040 is book three of the Shifters Evolution series. This is a creative and inventive story that has a very different view of shape shifters.
To me, this novel is more sci-fi than paranormal. The shifters are an alien race that invades earth in the year 2020. The SCM is a branch of the military that was established to eradicate the shifters. The SCM also performs hideous experiments on the shifters and hybrids. This is more than a fictional story, underneath the tale lies the moral lesson about the wrongs of prejudice.
There are so many characters and character types that sometimes I got a little confused with who was who, but the glossary at the beginning of the book is quite helpful. I found that although the book can stand alone I would have gotten more out of the story had I not started in the middle. I would definitely recommend starting this series from the beginning.
All in all, I found this to be a captivating story with elements of turmoil and romance. When I thought I knew where the story was heading, the author added a little twist. Blackwelder is an author I would read again.
Set in Alaska in 2040, Melissa Marn and Bruce Wilder must work under the iron fist of the SCM, while still try- ing to maintain humanity. Discovering a world of shifters and hybrids, the scientists must struggle with human prejudice and betrayal. With the original ancestors, dubbed shifters, still living on earth, humans are in the midst of a fifteen year old war. As the eldest hybrids, Unseen and Diamond, learn about humans the hard way, with the loss of loved ones and sacrifices, love on planet earth proves challenging.
