Picture with me a spooky castle from an old fashioned vampire movie. Evil gargoyles stare unblinkingly at you from the roof and seem to watch your every move. A sense of evil and foreboding hangs in the air. The servants are fearful and afraid to meet your eyes. Your intuition screams that the place is full of intrigue and dark secrets. Now make a slight adjustment to your mental picture so that the castle becomes a gothic, Italian palazzo and you have the setting for Christine Feehan’s Lair of the Lion. Feehan’s talent at depicting vivid imagery is sensational in this clever marriage of a gothic Beauty and the Beast meets sexy shape-shifter book.
While many of Feehan’s books can be light on plot, this story happily has plenty of intrigue and mystery. Isabella Vernaducci will do anything to rescue her brother. Her last hope is the legendary Don Nicolai DeMarco, a man with money, power, and rumored supernatural abilities at his disposal. Isabella agrees to become the bride of the man that others cannot look upon as human. She is doomed to be murdered by him after bearing an heir. Love and compassion are pitted against raging lions and centuries old curses.
Lair of the Lion is a stand-alone book that is not part of a series. It is an excellent example of paranormal romance that fans of the genre will greatly enjoy. It’s the kind of tale that you’ll wish someone would make into a movie. In the meantime, cuddle up and enjoy a good read.
Impoverished aristocrat Isabella Vernaducci will defy death itself to rescue her imprisoned brother. She’ll even brave the haunted, accursed lair of the lion–the menacing palazzo of legendary, lethal Don Nicolai DeMarco. Rumor says the powerful don can command the heavens, that the beasts below do his bidding…and that he is doomed to destroy the woman he takes as his wife. But Isabella meets a man whose growl is velvet, purring heat, whose eyes hold dark, all-consuming desire. And when the don commands her to become his bride, she goes willingly into his muscled arms, praying she’ll save his tortured soul…not sacrifice her life.
