From St. Martin’s Press http://us.macmillan.com/ascension

Alison Wells is no ordinary woman. Born with supernatural powers, she can never make love to a man without putting him in grave danger. But when her special vision reveals  a glorious muscled man soaring overhead on mighty wings, she feels an overwhelming attraction she cannot resist—even as he tells her: “I have come for you. Your blood belongs to me.

Kerrick is a vampire and a warrior who has fought his hunger for a woman’s love for the past two hundred years. As a Guardian of Ascension, he is sworn to protect Alison from the death vamp armies who crave her blood and her power. But Kerrick has cravings of his own—a forbidden longing to open his heart and veins to Alison. To share his blood…satisfy his thirst…and seal their fates forever.

Roane has a new twist on vampires—they are all winged, and are a higher form than mortal humans.  When one answers the call to ascension, it means they are accepting the higher state of being, and will become a vampire, complete with fangs, wings and speed; also a perk is to ascend to Second Earth.

I thought the story line was pretty good, with some engaging and interesting action scenes.  However, I found it very difficult to love this story because our heroine, Alison, expresses her emotions in one way—tears.  And she cries a lot, whether she’s overwhelmed, happy, sad or frustrated.  I also thought Roane’s choice for calling the ‘bad guys’, death vamps, was quite ridiculous.  There was complete lack of imagination—they are addicted to dying blood, hence the need to kill anyone they can find.  Roane spent too much time describing how tortured Alison and Kerrick are in their feelings for each other, and why they can’t be together.  She hammered this point home at every opportunity they were within ear-shot of each other.

Despite my disappointment in the details, the story overall is an interesting one, and may be compared to Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series (maybe a little too closely); the Warriors of Blood all live in a compound together, a few of them prefer strong scotch, and there is the promise of a fated-mate, and all the men try to fight off that pull to the woman meant for them.  There is a glossary of terms to help you understand her terminology at the end of the book but it would have been more helpful if it appeared in the front of the book.

I give it 2 ¾ stars out of 5 for story, and 4 flames for sexuality.

Without further ado, the talented R.L. Mathewson!

Nicole North’s Laird of Darkness is a historical, highland, fae romance. Yes, all three wrapped into one tantalizing tale. Sexy and seductive, Duncan MacDougall is such a compelling character that I found myself hoping from the beginning that he was a “good guy” after all. I wish there would’ve been more in the book about his fae background but really the “fae” part of his character plays a very small part. There were several background characters, but Duncan and Alana dominate the story in such a way that the rest of the world disappears. Their love story is filled with sweet emotion and steamy sex you can’t help but want them together forever. Fast-paced and sensual, the only thing that could make it better was if it was longer. I’m not sure if there is going to be a follow up to Laird of Darkness, but I would be first in line to read more from this story.

Laird Duncan MacDougall is haunted by nightmares that leave him marred with bites and scratches from creatures he is helpless to stop without the magical bow & arrows that his half-brother, Kinnon MacClaren possesses. Unfortunately Kinnon is also Duncan’s enemy, cursed by their mother to never be able to set foot upon each other’s lands, obtaining the bow has been a near impossible feat.

When Duncan kidnaps Kinnon’s intended bride, Lady Alana Forbes, Duncan believes he has the one thing that will finally get the magical bow into his hands. Holding Lady Alana as hostage, he offers a trade to his half-brother: the bow in exchange for Kinnon’s beautiful bride to be. What Duncan didn’t plan for was his feelings for Alana. Duncan finds himself helpless against the draw of Alana’s beauty and challenging personality.  If only she wasn’t promised to his half-brother, he would keep her for himself, for her inner peace and “light” could be the saving grace that he needs.

She’s never met her intended husband, Kinnon MacClaren and can only hope that he is not only handsome, but a generous lover. While not proper for her to be experienced, she is no virgin and desires a man that can satisfy her needs in the bedchamber.

On the way to Claren Castle, Alana is kidnapped and taken hostage by a seductive and sexy man with magical abilities. Finding out the man is half-fae and also the half-brother of her future husband does nothing to keep her from wanting him. While she knows her body wants him, is he truly what her heart desires? Can Alana become more than a pawn in the middle of a battle between brothers? Or will the brothers’ hatred of each other take the decision out of her hands?

Three short stories by Terry Spear at the irresistable price of $.99 each!

Click “HERE” to read about all three!

The Siren’s Lure

Any fan of Terry Spear’s Wolf, Highland, or Vampire books will enjoy this short story. The Siren’s Lure contains all we’ve come to expect from Spear with plenty of humor, action, and sexual heat to fill the pages from start to finish. The Siren’s Lure has something for everyone with the sexy siren Demon Huntress Tristina and the sizzling seductive Vampire Prince Sardis.

Sardis, the leader of the New York Vampire Clan, wanted nothing more than to hang out at the beach resort and have a nice relaxing vacation. How was he to know that saving a beautiful woman from two goons would turn his vacation and his life upside-down? The woman he saves claims to be a Huntress and since he’s a vampire, it would probably be wise to ignore his attraction to her and let her be on her merry way. When she changes her story several times he doesn’t know what to think. First she’s a Vampire Huntress, then she’s got a fiancé Hunter waiting for her, then she’s a Demon Huntress, and finally she just needs to get to her friend Jane’s party. Fearing that she’s really just a mentally unstable human, he decides to escort her to the “party” she is so decadently dressed up for. Finding nothing but a deserted room containing a fire demon and a ghost, he starts to rethink his doubts; especially when she helps him kill the demon by sucking all the water from its body.

When a gorgeous vampire steps in and “saves” her, Tristina tries to not get her hopes up that he will really want her. Half human and half water demon, she has a siren’s call that most men find irresistible. So while most men want her, none want her for who she really is. When the vampire, Sardis, refuses to give up his misguided assumption that she needs “protecting” she starts to wonder if his feelings for her are as undeniable as hers for him. She’s heard that vampires are viciously protective of their “mates”.

Tristina’s friend Jane was killed by a demon, but instead of passing over to the next life she has stayed as a poltergeist in that deserted room, summoning demons on the anniversary of her death every single year, hoping that one of the demons she summons will be the one that killed her and Tristina will be there to destroy it. But Jane isn’t the only one summoning demons in the area.

Together, Sardis and Tristina must find and destroy the Demon Summoner and his book of demon names and send Jane into the afterlife if they are to have any chance at a life together, for Sardis must return to his life in New York, but Tristina can’t leave the area to the demons unchecked.

Goddess In Training

No one is safe when the gods play their games.

Terry Spear’s short tale of passion and love will please any romance fan. With only 25 pages, Spear does a fantastic job of filling each and every page with vivid descriptions and imaginative characters that will keep you entertained to the end.

Zeus and Hera, ever the competitive couple, have placed a wager.  Zeus, in his infinite wisdom, knows that mortals and immortals alike need only physical satisfaction to be happy. Hera wholly disagrees. As the Goddess of Marriage, Hera knows that while they may be satisfied physically, they will never be complete without love being a part of that physical pleasure.

Zeus places Asarian, the demi-god of pleasure against a human of Hera’s choosing. After much thought, Hera chooses Lisandra, a 26 year old virgin librarian.

If Zeus wins then Lisandra will become the demi-god of fertility. If Hera wins, then the gods will forever leave Asarian & Lisandra to their own lives without interference.

Asarian, caught in the middle of Zeus & Hera’s game, walks into Lisandra’s library assured that he will win the bet for Zeus. He’ll seduce Lisandra, giving her the greatest pleasure she’s ever known and leave her completely satisfied while keeping both their hearts out of it. That’s what Asarian does after all; pleasure the women with his body, but not his heart. What should’ve been an easy assignment becomes one of the most challenging things he’s ever done.

Lisandra may not be wise in the ways of carnal pleasures, but she knows what she wants. When Asarian walks into her life she can’t deny he’s gorgeous, but she can see how dangerous he could be to her heart. Not willing to settle for less than everything from him, Asarian has no choice but to seduce her in what Lisandra thinks is a dream. Asarian soon finds out that Lisandra can do what even all the goddesses on Olympus can’t. She can bring this demi-god of pleasure down on the knees of his heart.

Seducing the Huntress

Terry Spear’s Seducing the Huntress is so seductive that after reading this 50-page short story, I felt as if I’d just read a full length novel. It’s amazing how much emotion and action Spear can pack into so few pages. The story of Sarzoven and Miranda in Seducing the Huntress hooks you from the first page and has twists and turns that keeps you guessing until the very last pages.  This is just a teaser of what Terry Spear’s vampires are like. If you enjoy this short story, you have to pick up Deadly Liaisons, one of my personal favorites!

After 600 years, Sarzoven and his sister Catarina, have played many death-defying games and wagers. When you’re a vampire and pretty much have eternity to look forward to, it takes a lot to get you excited. That changes when Catarina’s newest bet is seducing the huntress Miranda Landower, daughter to one of the most successful vampire hunters. To make the bet even more intriguing for Sarzoven is the fact that he is on Miranda’s list of rouge vampires to be terminated. Sarzoven feels up to the task until he takes very close notice of her. Something about her has his body thrumming with desire. After losing his human mate over 100 years ago, he swore to never get emotionally involved with another human. Suddenly he’s not sure who’s being seduced—him or Miranda.

Miranda is a vampire huntress and she’s very good at what she does. Her list of kills is long, but all of them were proven rogues. Miranda doesn’t blindly kill those on her list of rogues; she hunts at night when she can catch them in the act, proving that they deserve their fate. So when Sarzoven’s name shows up on her list, she knows something isn’t right. Why would a vampire with a history of helping protect humanity suddenly turn against it? She’s got doubts about this sexy vampire but suddenly she’s hoping her list is wrong this time.

When Sarzoven saved her from an assassin’s bullet, Miranda realized that she may in fact be on someone’s termination list herself—but why? Could it be because she didn’t terminate Sarzoven on sight or could it be something more personal? Sarzoven and Miranda must overcome their differences and trust each other in order for them both to survive. But even if they survive, is there any chance of a future for a vampire huntress and a 600 year-old vampire?

Hunger Untamed, the 5th book in the Feral Warriors series, features one of the oldest of the Ferals, Kougar.  Kougar has always been the one Feral that intrigued me because he was so secretive and haunted; I just knew there was a great story there.  Pamela Palmer does not disappoint in revealing all that makes Kougar the Feral he is today. Kougar’s mate Ariana is a fascinating character and it was great to learn more about her people the Ilinas. There is a sub story woven into the book with Wulfe and a human they saved from the Daemons in Rapture Untamed; definitely something to look forward to when Wulfe’s book comes around. Fans of the Feral Warriors series have a lot to look forward to in this book. Hunger Untamed is packed with almost nonstop action, sexy powerful scenes between Kougar and Ariana, and revelations about the past of the Feral Warriors and the Sacrifice.  A spectacular addition to the Feral Warriors series and with the ending comes claws that hook you for the next book Ecstasy Untamed coming in November 2011.

1000 years ago Kougar lost his mate, Ariana, Queen of the Ilinas. When a powerful dark spirit attacked her people she left his side to go to them. The only thing Kougar knows is that when he felt the mating bond break, his life was over. He lived, yes, but a grieved filled existence is not really living. 21 years ago he was shocked to find out that the Ilinas weren’t extinct at all. They had faked their extinction when they were infected by a dark spirit. Though Ariana lived he knew she was not the woman he loved 1000 years ago. She was filled with a darkness that would leave her beautiful sparkling blue eyes a dark soulless pit he had no desire to see. Or so he thought.

With only 10 days left to save Tighe and Hawke from the Mage’s Spirit Trap, Kougar knows the only person that can help is the Queen of the Ilinas. His long lost wife. What Kougar finds in the Crystal Castle is not a soulless dark spirit, but something even more shattering. Finding out that his mate, his wife Ariana, had not only faked her death, but purposely broke their mating bond, leaving him to suffer for the last millennium…well, that makes for a very pissed off kitty.

Kougar knows something isn’t right about the story Ariana is trying to feed him. Why isn’t she shifting to mist? Why is she living among the humans, working in a hospital as an RN? If she isn’t infected with the dark spirit, why did she choose to break their bond?

Ariana has been fighting to save her people. Attacked by a powerful Mage’s poison 1000 years ago Ariana lost several of her maidens before taking the poison into herself and blocking it from the remaining Ilinas. Retreating to the sanctuary of the Crystal Realm she kept herself and her people safe for 1000 years by faking their extinction.

Now Kougar has found her and demands her help to save his friends and demanding answers she can’t give him. Saving his friends would cause the death of everyone she’s fought so hard to save, including Kougar himself.

Kougar and Ariana must come together to find the answer to save her people as well as Tighe and Hawke before it’s too late.  With only days left to save the trapped Ferals, the hardest fight they have to face is the love that they once shared; a love that has the power to destroy both the Ilinas and the Ferals if it’s allowed to solidify the mating bond between them again.

R.L. Mathewson’s Tall, Dark & Lonely had me hooked from the first page. When Ephraim wakes up chained to a bed with the maid calling him the devil, I was intrigued and wanted to know more. It just got better after that. The events of Ephraim’s immortal beginnings, in the first 20 pages of the book, happened so quickly that I was breathless by the time the story jumped 200 years to the present day.

The relationship between Ephraim and Madison develops quickly after a rough beginning. There really wasn’t much of a reaction from Madison upon finding out Ephraim was a vampire. The vampire issue becomes more of a humorous part of their relationship problems than a serious obstacle.  The dialogue was excellently written and I found myself laughing many times throughout the book because of the sarcasm and exasperation the characters displayed with each other. There were parts of the story towards the end that felt rushed, but not enough that it took away from the overall enjoyment of the book. I felt there could’ve been more information given to us about the “Sentinels” and “Pytes”. The end of the book was left pretty open so I’m hoping that means we will learn a lot more when the author continues the series. In whole, this book was a great read. I look forward to reading any future work from Ms. Mathewson.

From Pyte Series Webpage: http://www.rlmathewson.com/pyte.html

Things are finally looking up for Madison. After years of scraping just to get by she lands her dream job and finally has a decent down payment for a house so she can move her brother and sister into a real home. It’s too bad nothing ever goes the way it’s supposed to. When the mother that abandoned them years ago suddenly shows up and moves them to New Hampshire Madison has no choice but to go or lose the siblings who are more like children to her. Shoving her dreams aside yet again Madison tries to make a life for her siblings only to find that nothing is going the way it should. It’s really cold, her fifteen year old sister acts like a hooker in training, men act funny around her, her boss is a real prick, she feels like an outsider, her best friend turns out to be a sixteen year old smartass and the incredibly handsome guy renting the room adjoining hers not only hogs the bathroom taking three showers a day and leaving her with cold water, but he also has a secret. A secret that she becomes a bit obsessed with and can’t let go no matter how many times she’s warned off.

Ephraim learned long ago not to show any emotion or allow himself to get attached to humans. What was the point? They came and went and he remained. This time wouldn’t be any different or so he thought. When his land lady told him her grandchildren were moving in he didn’t expect much, well other than to be left the hell alone. What he didn’t expect was to have to fight bloodlust every time he so much as caught a whiff of his delectable neighbor’s scent or her bombarding him with questions every time she cornered him. If that’s not bad enough a Master from his past has found him once again and is demanding his blood and is willing to do anything to get it, even using the beautiful pain in the ass neighbor that makes him feel more than pain for the first time in centuries.
