Scions: Resurrection (Jan. 1, 2008) by Patrice Michelle is an adrenaline rush of the first order with top-notch action sequences propelling the story from start to finish. Romance is involved, too, of course, as our hero and heroine ride a collision course toward destiny, with both personal and larger implications, in this first part of the Scions series from Silhouette Nocturne.
The story picks up with Jachin Black, a vampire who has been banished from his vampire clan and is just trying to survive in a world where human blood is poison to his kind. To make a living, and buy purified blood, Jachin serves as a hitman, taking out humans with decidedly questionable morals and ethics. His rage against humankind is personal, however, allowing him to do his “job” without much remorse.
Jachin believes in a prophecy, one that predicts peace and prosperity for his hunted — and believed extinct — race. He has been waiting, watching, biding his time, hoping to help with the time comes. His patience pays off when he learns that an author, Ariel Swanson, has penned a book detailing that EXACT prophecy. How could a human know such things!?
Seizing the chance to help his people, Jachin kidnaps the feisty Ariel and sets out to take her to the leader of his clan, hoping to bring the prophecy to fruition. Things, however, aren’t that simple. Other factions with their own agendas are after her, too, while his own people want him dead, making his simple mission a fight for survival, danger awaiting them at every turn even as their growing fondness and attraction to each other threatens to sweep them away with passion.
I do believe Scions: Resurrection takes place at some point in the future — I’m not sure exactly how far, but some of the weapons of choice are decidedly different from contemporary arms — and I’ll admit that this appealed to the sci-fi fan in me … a lot. More appealing, though, is Michelle’s vampire mythology, which I found to be unique and intriguing but won’t detail here because I think you’ll appreciate it more when you read it for yourself.

Lynn Viehl is a master of smart and sexy. Her Darkyn series is one of the best around — gritty, visceral and written with a keen eye for detail and gift for character. Evermore, the fifth book in the series and due out in January 2, 2008, is no exception, bringing together elements of mystery, danger, suspense and loving eroticism in a beautiful cocktail all but guaranteed to satisfy the thirsty romantic in all of us.
Truly, there are few things more powerful and compelling than a story of long-hidden love being brought to light, then requited. Mix in a battle between good guys and bad guys, then throw in a few characters whose loyalty is a mystery, and you’ve got one hell of a book. Give most of the characters fangs and hunger for blood, and you’ve got one hell of a vampire romance book.
In Evermore, the lovely Jayr has been seneschal to her Darkyn master, Byrne, for centuries, since she gave up her mortal life to save his — and she’s been in love with him all that time. Not once, however, have they shared anything more intimate than the annual blood-sharing ritual renewing their oath of loyalty as master and servant, leaving them both aching and in want for more as Byrne secretly pines for her, too.
Things are about to change, however. Byrne has made a choice to leave the Kyn and seek isolation as his unique Kyn gift has left him worn out and on the brink of losing control over it. Before he goes, though, he is determined to find a new master for Jayr and organizes a medieval gaming tournament to find the most suitable candidate. But as you can always count on in books, and often in life, things don’t go exactly according to plan and Jayr and Byrne soon come face to face with their unrequited love and passion. Will they be able to deny it?
Ms. Viehl does her usual superb job of building and maintaining tension and mystery throughout the story. The love story at its heart is tender and passionate, one that tugs the heartstrings without becoming overly sentimental.

In Touch The Dark, Karen Chance crafts a complex and intriguing paranormal underworld populated by vampires, faeries, pixies, demons, were-creatures, witches and mages. For good measure, she stirs in some Greek mythology then gives us a headstrong and resourceful heroine with a destiny. Altogether, it makes for one heck of a read.
Touch The Dark is written in first-person in the voice of Cassandra Palmer, a young woman with a clairvoyant gift, or curse depending on your perspective. She sees ghosts in all shapes and sizes and can converse with them, and she has a gift for Seeing things from the past and future. She’s also in hiding, trying to stay off the radar with the vampire world as her former master has a price on her head. Unfortunately, fate has other things in mind for Cassie and before she knows it, she’s embroiled in a battle between powerful factions and herself the prize.
Romance takes a backseat to the action and mystery in the book, but there are some serious sparks between Cassie and a very powerful master vampire, downright erotic in fact, and I am hopeful this will be explored more in future volumes in the Cassandra Palmer Series. Their relationship has incredible sexual chemistry and potential for much more, including love.
