For those of you who are artistically inclined and fans of Colleen Gleason's Gardella Vampire Chronicles, I've just been informed that Kailana's Written World is running a cool contest you may be interested in.

The object is to do something in homage to Ms. Gleason's books, whether writing a bit of fan fiction, drawing a picture, or taking a photograph. Whatever you choose to do, it has to relate to the Gardella Vampire Chronicles books, The Rest Falls Away, Rises the Night and the upcoming The Bleeding Dusk.

Head on over to Kailana's Written World to find out more.

Holy bone-melting erotic vampire sex!

Bond of Blood by Diane WhitesideI just finished reading Diane Whiteside’s Bond of Blood and all I can say is “Holy bone-melting erotic vampire sex!” Seriously.

Despite having an affection for the Texas Hill Country and having this site about vampire romance books, I had not read any of Ms. Whiteside’s other Texas Vampire short stories prior to picking up Bond of Blood, the first in a Texas Vampire novel trilogy. I really had no idea what to expect, but I have to say I’m very impressed and find myself eager to read the second part, Bond of Fire, which is due out in January.

Bond of Blood is riveting and some kind of steamy as we’re introduced to the world of Don Rafael Perez, a former medieval knight who governs the vampire population of modern day Texas. His “kingdom” is one of law and order, and at peace, but there are power-hungry factions around them, ones who would lay claim to his beloved Texas in an instant if he let his guard down. Therefore, he is constantly vigilant, aware of the dangers that surround him and his band of loyal men and those under his care. With his position, he has almost everything he could ask for — power, wealth, friends and willing women — but his heart has no one to love. For centuries, it has remained untouched, devoted to the memory of his loving wife.

Then Grania O’Malley enters his life.

New to Texas, Grania is a brilliant and well-respected veterinarian specializing in wild birds. She has lived a rather quiet, lonely life, concentrated on getting her education and pursuing her career. All her life, though, Grania has kept the company of her dreams, dreams of life as the wife of a strong and handsome knight. They are vivid dreams, but just dreams … or so she believes until the day she sets eyes on Don Rafael Perez — the spitting image of her knight, in the flesh.

Curiosity and attraction collide as Grania and Rafael meet and quickly begin a dance of mind and heart (and body), igniting their passion and opening the doors to their souls — and pasts — even as danger and death loom and evil plans to tear them apart.

Bond of Blood is well and intensely written, filled with romance, suspense and flagrantly erotic (and loving) sex, making it one of those books that is next to impossible to put down once you start it.

Have you read Bond of Blood? If so, please feel free to leave a comment and let us know what you think.

Susan Squires has one of the richest voices in vampire romance and has rapidly become one of my favorite authors in the genre.

One With The Shadows by Susan SquiresIn One With The Shadows, the fifth book in her Companion series, she tells the story of Kate, a charlatan wowing the Italian aristocracy with her tarot-reading and on-the-fly creative “writing” skills, and Gian Urbano, a tall, dark and handsome aristocrat and vampire who was the inspiration for Michelangelo’s David.

Their paths first cross at a parlor room where Kate is performing in hopes of earning enough money to fulfill her dream of buying a cottage and retiring to the English countryside. They take an immediate dislike to each other as he sets out to expose her a fraud. But something unusual happens. The cards tell true for the first time and Kate receives a vision of Gian being tortured by a woman holding a green jewel — a jewel that will forever alter the course of their lives.

Ms. Squires’ Kate and Gian are as much alike as they are different. Both are strong-willed. Both have been hurt and taken advantage of. Both are warriors — he a soldier who fought against the evil vampiress Ashtiri’s uprising in Africa, while she has been fighting all her life for a place in a world that would offer her none. But where, in a twist on Beauty and the Beast, he is the epitome of the physical beauty of his gender she is marred, one side of her face marked with a spiderweb of scars. Where he is a child of privilege, she is a child of the streets. Where he is duty and honor bound, she employs avarice as a means of survival.

Strangely enough, though, their lives are without purpose. He is without hope for what to do in a long life that has already seen him robbed of his manhood in many ways while Kate’s financial goals and dreams of an idealistic retirement in pastoral England ring hollow. Something is conspicuously missing for both of them — passion, which they unexpectedly and blessedly find, along with love, in each other during a harrowing adventure that takes them from the streets of Florence to the high seas and deep into the deserts of Africa.

It is a joy to watch Gian and Kate discover within each other things they never thought to find — beauty inside as well as out, generosity of heart, courage in the face of danger, innocence despite worldly experience, and sincerity and keen intelligence in defiance of their respective aristocratic and coarse upbringings.

As in the previous Companion series books, the writing in One With The Shadows, which is due out in December, is top notch. Descriptions are lush and the characters veritably leap off the page, which are the primary reasons I honestly love this series, even with the unsettling, not-for-the-faint-hearted content.

That said, for those concerned that they’ll find more of the “compelled” sexual encounters of Ashtiri’s liking, you’ll be pleased to know there is much less of that in this installment as Ms. Squires focuses on the gentler tone needed for our scarred hero and heroine as they discover a passion for life, and each other.

Have you read One With The Shadows? If so, please feel free to leave a comment and let us know what you think.
