The Vampire’s Kiss by Cynthia Eden presents all the necessary trappings of a vampire romance novel: a lonely Byronic hero living in a dark mansion on a secluded mountain top, a tragic heroine who needs his help, and a villain who takes all the fun out of falling in love. The main characters, William Dark and Savannah Daniels, arrive on the page fully developed and they are quite easy to like. She’s an adorable, kind, and brave young woman; and he’s a tall, dark, and handsome vampire. The villain, Geoffrey de Montfort, is equally well developed. He is the kind of vampire who gives the reader the creeping crawlies. Likewise, the storyline is engaging with either romance or suspense keeping the quick pace of the novel full of action.
Overall The Vampire’s Kiss is a good vampire romance novel. Unfortunately, it falls short of being great with descriptive elements in the novel needing more creative detail. Additionally, while the erotic scenes that are neatly woven into the suspenseful plot are tastefully titillating, the use of the phrase “they were so close that she didn’t know where he began and she ended” is, regrettably, tired and cliché.
On the upside the storyline in The Vampire’s Kiss is well rounded and leaves nothing loose in the end. Likewise, the characters in the novel are believable and leave the reader interested to read more of their stories. Unfortunately, the novel’s lack of descriptive detail and the use of romantic cliché leave the reader bored in certain places of an otherwise captivating vampire romance.
